The Value of "Thinking Outside the Box" ...

Thomas Edison was not educated, not in the traditional sense. Yet he was incredibly practical. Edison had a team of mathematicians working for him because he didn’t like to occupy himself with what he considered tedious mathematical equations. Though its possible Edison just wasn't overly proficient at math.

One day his mathematicians were working on the puzzle of finding the volume of a very odd shaped hollow object that contained many sides with various angles and curves. As you would expect, even for a team a mathematicians, handling the calculations on such an object takes time.

After they had been working things out for about an hour, Edison walked into the lab and noticed their painstaking efforts to solve this question. Edison thought for a moment, grasped the object from the hands of one of the mathematicians, filled it with water, and poured the water into a beaker. He then measured the volume of the water in the beaker and had their answer in a matter of seconds.

In the words of Leonardo da Vinci, sometimes simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
