The pros and cons of zoos

Okay, we have the thread about the Cincinatti incident, but I'd like to leave that alone for a minute because some people on that thread said zoos are no good without saying why. Okay... I can understand that the idea of keeping animals in cages upsets you. And it can lead to unnatural behavior. In Dutch, we even have a word for it. IJsberen=Icebearing=walking up and down again and again. Because that's what big bears and cats do when they're stuck in a cage with nothing to do.
But... What if the animals do have something to do in their cages that is like their natural behaviour? Wouldn't that show the visitors something about those animals?
You know when I was a kid, my parents didn't take me to visit zoos. I took my parents! I saw wild animals on TV and then wanted to see them for real. My love for animals started in zoos, without zoos I would never have known what a casuaris or a jaguar or an okapi was. And if you don't know these animals exist, you don't care whether they live or die. So zoos are important in letting people know about exotic animals.
And they play a part in breeding and keeping alive animals that are on the verge of extincion.
So... The question is... Zoos... Yay or nay?
And if the answer is nay, what's the slternative?

I'm just going out so I'll post a longer reply later but I would be far more in favour of zoos if they went out of their way to make the environment natural. Problem is if, for example, you built a forest for the gorillas no-one would be able to see them. I also think the natural hunting order should be retained so that antelopes and wildebeest are put with lions and crocs etc... But this would never happen as it would be seen to distress the visitors.

There are some better zoos who try really hard but however hard you try these are wild animals captured for our entertainment. There are few releases into the wild for endangered species and I don't know if I honestly think that existence solely within zoos can be seen as a proper existence at all. Though if you think like this then should we keep pets? It's complex as they no doubt plant seeds of interest for many children who have no other access to the creatures but at what cost?

there are no 'pro's

after childhood i could refuse to go to those places...

after childhood i could refuse to go to circuses...

even my bird has an open cage...

zoo aren't a way to preserve life

it's a way for people to go look at animals at their whim...

they use to have blackskin people on display in zoos...

let's find the 'pro' to that, then we can see the pro to all of it...

but until you can find the 'pro' for that... kill that noise.

there is no 'upside' to zoos

I would like it if the zoos were in section of natural habitats with glasses were the animals cant see us. like animals in the jungle grouped in that habitat, tundra etc. Let them live as natural as possible not in sad limited cages. Or maybe a virtual zoo like those rides at Universal studio rides.

My friend in Amsterdam takes his kids to the zoo and it looks pretty nice.

I don't like zoos. If they only kept relatively small animals, I wouldn't have a problem, but many big ones are ill-suited for them.

That being said, if zoos were reversed (animals would roam freely whereas humans would be kept in cages), I'd wholeheartedly support that biggrin

I went to a zoo once in Japan and could not believe how small the cages were. I went to zoos too as a kid and will never forget an encounter I had with a gorilla. I came away from the day thinking about how sad he looked. It was like looking at my great grandfather or something, just sitting there while people took pictures and laughed and stared at it. I think the relationship humans have with animals is the reason we have zoos. We think that we are not at all similar to animals. If we realized that we were, the attitude toward animals in captivity would surely change.

I see no pros at all, animals do not exist for our entertaining.

When I was a kid and went to the local zoo the cages were tiny and most od the animals acted dispirited and sluggish. I'll never forget an old chimp smoking a cigarette and begging the zookeepers for another when he finished it. confused

Unfortunately, there is none. Ask the tiger...

or the Condor. When I saw one flying over the grand canyon, i felt a sense of pride that our zoo was responsible for that. Encroachment is real, poachers/hunters are real, there has to be something that stands in the gap of all that. Preserves help, but they don't educate the average person enough. People need to see to care, tv is nice but an upclose personal experience is better for a larger percentage of the people. Maybe I've grown up seeing a better zoo experience, but I'm pro-zoo.

There are good zoos and bad zoos. I would have to say that the majority of them have improved greatly since I was a kid. There is a real need to develop more programs to save the remaining populations of animals on the verge of extinction. It is because of programs like this that wolves are once again roaming Yellowstone National Park. While I would prefer to see wild game preserves developed, the fact is that zoos serve a purpose. But I would like to eliminate the miserable animal prisons of my youth.

No. I used 2 cry when the school took me 2 london zoo as a kid. They'd be better off dead. Prison 4 animals. They die inside, they lose their minds, it's obvious.

A few things do need to improve and improvements are always being made. The tiger enclosure especially needs something more, I think. I love our walk thru aviary. Then there's the Wild Animal Park, not a preserve but still more of the animals have more of a wide open running space away from the population.
