Yeah, what's the best computer to buy with Linux already installed? And yes I know I can install it myself. lol Aren't there advantages to having a computer with a dual system--Linux and Windows 7?

Assuming you're American, I wouldn't be able to tell you the first question - you'll have to ask TD for that. Question 2) This is kind of strange to answer - there is no technical difference, other than that you'll waste a large amount of hard drive space having 2 OSes - Linux will just run better, more efficiently on your computer. But I really need to know what you DO on your computer!! If and only if, you do something for which there is no equivalent Linux software, do you need Win installed - and that too, as we've already talked about, you can run Win in a "box". So - really, there is no need. However, I'd still rather you answer the question first. Not that I know all possible Linux softwares that exist of course!

I'm still running win7. I disabled the updates the last time TD posted a warning about the evil Microsoft demons.

Besides surfing the innerwebs I use Gimp, FastStone, Movie Maker and Overdrive the most. I have no issues and I want to keep it that way,

That's good to hear because some folks have had to send their to computer techs to get back to Win 7 / 8.1; in some instances data had been lost and couldn't be recovered.

I've been deleting, hiding. and uninstalling Windows 10 and its Telemetry on my family and friends computers for a year. Every time Microsoft would un-hide or re-install Win 10's software in updates or change the update(s) number. I've shut down all updates and shutdown my PC until the July 29 deadline for "free" Windows 10. I'm done with Microsoft after Windows 7 dies.... Apple and Linux hence forth.

TD provided some useful links--I'm looking at getting a Linux preinstalled Lenovo. You ask people what they use their computers for; my needs are very basic: surf the internet, download music & documents, use e-mail, send/print documents, stream movies, look at Youtube videos, play CDs/DVDS, etc. So I would want Linux compatible programs to accomplish those needs.

I think pretty much ALL modern Linux distros will handle that stuff without a hitch, but not all will do it out-of-the-box - you'll probably need Mint for that (MP3s and DVDs). Makulu probably does it as well. When you say "stream movies" - which service? If it's an American only one, sorry, once again, TD would have to help you out. And printing - please get a printer compatible with Linux.

My thing is multi-media and Linux does this better in some respects than Apple and Windows. So, I'll give you some of the Apps I use on my desktop computer / laptop an

Music: Recording, Editing, Voice-over, and Mixing.

Photos Apps: Film Editing, Graphics, Photo imaging & Organizing

Streaming, Music, & Media

The up-teem different music apps and streaming are numerous , I'll give you my top picks. cool

Ripping Software for Music CD's & DVD's

Cloud & "Lan Networking"

Note I didn't mention DropBox because is security is a jock. I didn't mention open source OwnCloud because the people who are behind OC are in transition... one of the founders has left the project. After attempting several to use OwnCloud, I found it unreliable... its a work in progress. Some of the folks who've left the OC project are rebooting with their another Cloud service... I hope to test is soon. I use all 3 services above... Mega cloud can misfire from time to time but its pretty solid. I'd advice not to store anything you don't have a copy of something you can bare to lose. For important data and/or documents, I'd use Toniod and SpiderOak. Saving grace Mega like Oak has end to end encryption. These Cloud apps do have for Apple & Android apps.

Libre Office - https://www.libreoffice.org/

This is just for starters, there's CD / DVD burning software, gaming, STEAM, 4 Alternatives to Skype, and other tips & tricks to integrate your Linux computer(s) with your mobile tech.

When you get comfortable with Linux, we can talk how single board computer such as Raspberry and ODROID will allow you to setup your computer the way you want and not be a slave to Apple, Google or Windows walls of gardens... while securing your computer & data.

Oh, and for Skype, this is the best alterative I would think: appear.in (you'll need a relatively recent browser)

I was giving babynoz and purplethunder examples what Linux had to offer, and how it may be an option to leave Windows for good. Dropbox, was one of the earliest file/cloud sharing service... I've not been impressed with their security back in the day or now. Storing data in the cloud, use common sense... my tax returns or anything having to deal with our fiances are stored. I've become very selective about storing photos without ffolks permission. But, I've had stored stuff like notes, Linux tips and tricks using, current project of code, and other things that support I Linux / computer literacy program for example.

I checked out https://vivaldi.com/

Nope, Google Chrome architecture is running underneath. Vivaldi is a beautiful looking browser that gives you a lot of control on your browser would look like. It has split screen capabilities, its snappy (fast) but....

They pay their bills by advertisment to the left, right and top of your pages and tabs at all time... can't close them out. Its a wide-open browser, no addons to block tracking, cookies, LSU cookies nothing. This may change but I think Vivaldi bread and butter are the advertisments and of course tracking. So nope... I may check out Opera that claims they'll have VPN installed within their web-brower.

Please add Linux Apps that you use or think would be interesting. cool

The next desktop I purchase will be one of the linux preloaded models. I have never used Dropbox. I am not much of a cloud person and try to minimize my usage of those services.

Check Pinta - https://pinta-project.com...ect/pinta/ it's nice and small and I like it... smile In addition to GIMP and Krita, how many do u need....? smile

For videos - Shotwell, as TD said.

I saw Overdrive, and I don't know about this..... why is an app needed to get ebooks? Linux will show PDFs fine, and play MP3s fine, do you d/l them in that format? If not, how about telling em to make something for Linux?

How do u know what security they have?

Why are you storing somewhere else? Why not just burn it to a CD, and lock it up in a cupboard or something?

DropBox doesn't have...

  • Users can’t set granular permissions.
  • Data encryption is limited.
  • You can’t set different sharing permissions for sub-folders.
  • You can’t lock files for collaborative editing.

Say your working on a project, it's not feasible for all parties to together at a place. The Cloud is very convenient, I can't tell you how many times I've forgotten a flash drive with data or picked up the wrong flash drive or external hard drive. It you are sharing ideas, writing a proposal , or just want to keep your correspondence private... you should be able to encrypted and give specific folders passwords. Drop box doesn't have those options.

LinkedIn is and always been a joke, the SPAM the security breaches. I know a lot of people who've deleted their accounts after the heard of Microsoft's purchase. Just another data harvesting tool for them. Besides, I've never known Microsoft to improve on any 3rd party hardware or software they've purchased. Remember Skype? lol
