The visually stunning world of James Cameron's Avatar is coming back in a big way.

The director confirmed there will be four sequels to the 2009 space epic at 20th Century Fox's CinemaCon presentation Thursday.
"We have decided to embark on a truly massive cinematic process," Cameron revealed.

The current plan is to release the first of the new films on Christmas 2018, with the next installments tentatively scheduled for Christmas 2020, Christmas 2022 and Christmas 2023.

"Each one of which stands alone," Cameron promised, "but which together form a complete saga."

He added, "I've been working the last couple of years with a team of four top screenwriters to design the world of Avatar going forward: The characters, the creatures, the environment, the new cultures.

"So far, the art I'm seeing, is in pure imagination, really far beyond the first film," he continued. "It's going to be a true epic saga."

The original Avatar, starring Sam Worthington (who's expected to return for the sequels) earned $2.8 billion worldwide, and remains the all-time highest grossing film in the world.

Yep, I'll see them when I'm in the nursing home. I think we'll have 3D holograms instead of monitors by then.

Not sure how people are going to react to this, but Michael Bay and James Cameron are in the same league when it comes to movies, most times.

Since it's was out, we've had I think 2 Star Treks, 3 Hobbits, 2 Avengers, Star Wars (I bet the next one will be out soon) movies. When all of these movies were anticipated ideas on a drawing board, there was a lot of talk about Avatar sequels and what they would be, and we still have to wait another 2-1/2 yrs for the 2nd one? But, each following sequel is only supposed to be 2 years later? Not holding my breathe.

I honestly gave up on James when he re-released Avatar in theaters again, citing "there was still some money on the table that we needed to get". It was the biggest movie in history - and he still wants more? I lost respect for him. It wasn't about the art anymore. He also dupped people into that first DVD release, that had no extras on it, then released another later with bonuses.

He announced 2 sequels, but 4 more? The first not for 2.5 years? The first was 9 years before that, if it comes out in 2018. Avatar doesn't have the franchise appeal (or any franchise at all) that things like Star Trek, Star Wars, Marvel, or DC has. But there will be people who will eat that stuff up. I won't be one of them.

It's gonna be interesting to see where he goes with the Giant Blue people....Avatar was about stopping Bulldozers from running over the Sacred apple tree....What will they be protecting in the next four Films, their Sacred uncuttable dreadlocks?

You know I'm a scifi freak that knew that (Star Wars) Journal of the Whills was a term back in 1977... because I was collecting back then and reading. I even had a discarded spock ear from the original TV series in a little box.... my favorite movie of all time is Close Encounters of the Third Kind, hence my name on here.

But James Cameron is such a nerd! He spoke his made up Na'vi language when he accepted an award! lol
