Netflix's New Show The Get Down Looks So Good, You Guys

One week into 2016 and we're already hyped for a show.

Netflix seems very intent on locking down your binge-watching schedule for 2016. This week, the streaming video service is showing off sizzle reels for some of it's upcoming original series—one of the first being Baz Luhrmann's long-gestating series The Get Down, and holy shit you guys.

A story about teens in the South Bronx during the 1970s, when New York City was in shambles and also on the cusp of an art scene explosion, The Get Down is clearly a disco-and-rap fueled cathartic fever dream of a show. It also manages to look equal parts very Baz Luhrmann (extremely busy, with a musicality to every scene and each frame jam-packed with stuff) and not like him at all (Luhrmann's stuff has been pretty white, almost exclusively so, and there's also a restraint that contrasts with his trademark madcap theatrical excess). The Get Down also happens to be co-created by Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, also known as The Actual Greatest Show of All Time, which is equally exciting if you've seen virtually any of Ryan's work.

There's so much to get hype for, seriously. Giancarlo Esposito as an angry pastor dad! Jaden Smith in a promising role! Another big part for Shameik Moore, of Dope fame! DJ lessons from Grandmaster Flash! And all the afros and dancing and disco and funk, man.
