As the season of feasting is upon us, what's your fave Xmas treats and does anyone actually like Turkey?

What's your traditional grub on Christmas Day and is it just habit or do you really love it?

Being in NZ in summer I have the perfect excuse to avoid the big turkey, ham and Brussel sprout traditions of my childhood in favour of whole bbqd eye fillet, sides of cold baked salmon and salads. Always room for a trifle though.

Seriously though, Turkey, why?

Back when my parents lived close and my sisters and I spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at their house, the best meal was on Christmas Eve - beef tenderloin fondue (with horseradish sauce), cheesy potatoes, and margaritas. Do not even ask me how that menu came into being, but we had so much fun. You had to cook each bite-sized piece of meat individually, so the meal lasted a long time. There was always great conversation and a lot of laughter. And usually a fabulous dessert at the end of it all.

Now, when we're at home for Christmas (which I won't be this year - my dad has cancer, so I'm going to Arizona), we have my sister and her family over and we have lasagne from a local deli. (Best lasagne ever, by the way.)

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

Actually from here on out every turkey I get from now on I'm brining. I went in the frig expecting to cutup half a turkey to put in the freezer, I found a skeleton with a wing. Put what was left in the freezer to make broth or something but I hadn't expected the thing to be inhaled in just a few days because according to everyone around me they can't stand turkey. And turkey already had it's special day in the states, so no more giant birds until next year.

I did a carmelized Red Salmon fillet last year, it was fabulous and easy.

I really need to do something to honor my Floridridian ancestory, might have something to do with 'gator I'm afraid.

What's wrong with just saying Holiday treats? A whole lot of people are celebrating a lot of things at this time of year. If your going to be inclusive then be inclusive. Unless your celebrating some unknown mass day then more power to you.

I'm eating everybody's food at this time of year, had Potato latkes with sour cream and homemade applesauce yesterday for lunch, they were good too.

Well my first question would not be "where did that fine sounding tradition come from?" But "can I come?" Sounds awesome.

I hope you're Dad will be ok.

Salmon and latkes. Now you're talking my language. :)

Sorry if i called it the wrong thing. It's not the hot button topic over here that it seems to be in the states. Here everyone calls it Christmas and very few ascribe any religiosity to it. I've been called out for saying happy holidays too so I figure I'll call it what I've always called it and hope no ones offended. I quite like calling it christmukkah sometimes so I still get to do the tree and also eat donuts for 8 days solid.

Call it as you wish, it's just given the conversations that continue to happen here every year, I just thought the major issue is the fact that everybody isn't getting acknowledged, the word Holiday pretty much covers everybody in my book. That should satisfy most folks. Granted somebody will get offended about anything under the sun, so I guess the word holiday is a pain too. I just love it when the big 3 land close to each other on the calendar, offense town all around time.

Now back to food, at which point I'm at everybody's party. What else we got because I haven't come up with plan for my Christmas feast yet and the clock's ticking. The whole Florida thing is looking kind of good right now, though, honoring a small part of my heritage.

Thank you. My dad's 83 and has never had a major illness in his life. We're hoping his therapy is effective and that he'll be around for a good while longer. smile

And go ahead and say "Christmas" if that's what you celebrate. If someone gets offended by that, they have bigger problems than you can (or should) be expected to deal with.

How about a gator and cranberry pie?

I just made a new ice cream I might introduce this year. Smoked paprika peanut butter ice cream. Trust me. It's amazing.

No, gator and cranberries might be the ideal dish, but Imma havta pass on that.

That's an interesting ice cream combo, must add an interesting twist.

If I'm honest, I cheated by using a boutique brand of peanut butter called smoke and fire which already has the paprika and cayenne in it. It works really well as ice cream as you get just a tiny kick of chilli. I might try Branston pickle ice cream next and serve it with deep fried Camembert as a sort of ploughmans pudding.

Lasagna for Christmas is wonderful. And if you can find a place that makes a killer lasagna that you can just heat at home, it's even better.

I used to do a huge Christmas Eve dinner - everything from appetizer to dessert. It absolutely wrecked me (even though I only had eight people for it) - and it was never better-received than the Italian deli lasagna I do now. I have salad and garlic bread with it, and make a dessert. Everybody gets plenty to eat and I can enjoy time with my family instead of tearing my hair out in the kitchen.

I can't eat cranberries, bad for those on blood thinners. There are times when being on a blood thinner comes in real handy - can't eat liver, certain leafy green veggies that I don't like, cranberries...but it sucks cuz can't have sharp cheddar cheeses, blueberries, and green teas either. :-/ So it also has its drawbacks.

now, i can eat turkey but i really don't enjoy the flavor that much. after the first day of eating it the turkey left overs take on a blandness to my palate.

the only 3 ways i will eat left over turkey meat after the first day is either in a burrito, hard shell taco or taco baked potato. something about the flavor in mexican food flavor combinations taste really good imo. the flavors kind of knock out that blandness the turkey takes on.

so turkey and do i acutally like it?
