Finger waves...

I am going to a big banquet in a few weeks and I will be wearing a black suit and polka dot tie (very cute outfit- I am a woman, though but this is woman's suit) anyway, I think for what I'm wearing I would love to do my hair in finger waves like Prince had in Under the Cherry Moon. I do know how to do a finger wave but I don't know how to set it. Does anyone know what I should use? Gel? some kind of creme or oil?

I'm not sure if that's what I used or not because I haven't had any fingerwaves in my hair since around 2000 or 2001. In the mid to late 1990s, lots of black people had fingerwaves and my best friend, who is black (I'm white), used to do them for me. I will tell you this though, the first time he did my hair, I went out and bought some styling gel (white folks styling gel), he told me with a quickness.... "Honey, that ain't gonna hold, get you some black folks styling gel"...... lol I can't remember what brand I bought, but it was in a dark colored jar and he had told me to get the dark colored gel (brown gel), not clear gel. It worked great. Of course, he got pissed at me when he saw me out in the club later that night because I had taken a little section of the bangs down and made a ring curl to the side similar to what Prince had in the movie. Hell, I had to add a little touch of fish to it. lol

So, is this ampro for black hair? I am white but I find that black hair care products work best for me. I love Africa's Best for conditioning my hair and have found other black hair care works great for my hair, which is very thick and can be coarse. I love that you did the little curl in the front! I love that! My hair has some strange cowlicks that drove me crazy as a kid but now as an adult give me automatic finger waves at the crown, although I will have to manipulate the rest. Anyway- I will look for this ampro and if I can't find it, sure I'll find it on Ebay! thank you.... smile

Yes, it's a black hair care product. It doesn't have to be that particular brand though. I don't even know if that's the brand I used to use. Simply go down the black hair care aisle in a store and look for jars of gel. Look for brown gel though, not clear gel.

.

If your hair is course, it may work better on your hair than mine. Mine is straight and slick, typical average white folks' hair. lol Even after I had it waved, I could feel the waves trying to unwave themselves so I sprayed the hell out of it with hairspray after the gel dried and held my hand over it while blowing it with a blowdryer to immediately make the hairspray dry.

.

One of my sisters, however, has naturally curly hair. She may be white but she makes Chaka Khan look bald. lol That heffer straightened her hair once and it took two relaxer kits to do it. Her hair was so thick, full, and bouncy, it resembled Prince's hair when he performed on American Bandstand. I would have killed to have that hair. lol

The brown gel instead of clea is a good tip- I 've never heard that --- thank you for your advice on this- If the gel isn't strong enough I will try the other tips- blow drying and spraying the hell out of it with hairspray! thanks! smile

Get it done professionally, or spend a lot of time working it out and practicing over the next few weeks. This is not something you can just decide to do and expect it to work the day of the event. Trust me on this one.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I don't use the Ampro gel, it flakes and it dries too hard....I like ECO Styler Gel just make sure you get the max hold. Buy some Saran wrap and wrap it around your head and put a plastic cap over that and sit under the dryer and it should come out just fine. Youtube has a lot of helpful videos for this hairstyle.

The Saran wrap is gonna keep everything in tact and in place while you dry. Make sure you don't over saturate your hair with the gel, towel dry the hair, and then add just enough gel, or it will take forever to dry and it will feel crunchy and hard. Just use enough on damp hair to hold the waves in place with duck clips if needed. Wrap with the Saran wrap, then a dryer cap, and sit under a hooded dryer, non direct heat at medium to low settting for long enough for your hair to be 80% dry, (this can take me 45 min to 1 hr depending on the style and how much gel I need), personally I go until I'm 90% dry. Then I take the off the plastic cap, remove the duck clips and leave the Saran wrap on to air dry for another hour or until the hair feels dry to the touch. Make sure you wrap at night if doing the day before. The gel can be found at Sally's BS, Walmart, and Target.

Now if you fail for any reason, no need to re-wash your hair simply saturate your hair with conditioner and leave on to re-moisten, then rinse out, and start over. Use something cheap with a good slip that will take the gel out. The next time, if you get your waves the way you like in shape and hold before you wrap without the duck clips then don't use them, they can be tricky to get out after your dry. If you find you do need them, spray them with a light spray of olive oil cooking spray, (I kid you not), before you put them in your wave set and when you're dry they will slide right out and the olive oil is good for your hair and will add shine. No matter what gel you use make sure it's a non-flaking and alcohol free. Hope this helps and I'm sure you will look great!

I don't know what your hair length or texture is but they have a lot of videos on youtube advising on both technique and the appropriate products to use.

Sorry i couldn't embed the video, suddenly I can't find the brackets on my computer dock since my dude made some changes on my desktop lol

If you decide to try the Ampro gel in the black jar, it will hold, but your hair will feel like cement was laid on it if you use a lot.

If you will, so will I
