Thousands Sign Petition to Fire Raven-Symoné from 'The View'

OCT 30 2015, 11:23 PM ET

>

A petition to remove Raven Symoné as a host on ABC's "The View" has garnered over 100,000 signatures in two days.

The petition, which is addressed to Barbara Walters, claims that Symoné doesn't represent the views of African Americans, and takes exception to comments she has made on the show about racial issues.

"Raven Symone has been spouting her ignorant and self-hating spiel on The View for long enough… African Americans and black people around the diaspora need a voice representative of their views," the petition on change.org reads.

Most recently, Symoné has received backlash for her comments about a Spring Valley High School student in Columbia, S.C., who was seen in video being flipped to the ground and dragged across a classroom floor by student resource officer Ben Fields. Fields has since been fired.

Symoné implied that both the officer and the girl held responsibility for the ugly encounter on one of the View's "After the View" segments.

"The girl was told multiple times to get off the phone," Symoné said. "There's no right or reason for him to be doing this type of harm — that's ridiculous — but at the same time, you gotta follow the rules in school."

Twitter users quickly jumped in to let the world know how they felt about her statements.

But this isn't the first time Symoné has been called out for her remarks. In another segment of "The View" earlier this month while talking about judging people based on names, Symoné said she would never never hire someone named "Watermelondrea."

Again, people were not pleased.

As of Friday afternoon, 104,137 people signed the petition.

Raven's implusive "quick to speak without instant forethougnt" is really a downfall for her. hopefully she can take some communication skills classes in the very near future.

I'm not an American, I don't know the program, so all I have to go on is this post. And it looks like "they" are trying to shut somebody down for saying things people don't like to hear. Ms Symone "doesn't represent the views of African Americans"? So what? Whoever said that a tv host has to represent the views of "the masses"? Do all African Americans think the same? Of course not. Symone has a right to her own opinion and she can only speak for herself, like everybody. If you don't like her, turn off the tv as soon as she's on. As George Clinton said, censorship is far worse than anything anybody might have to say.

The View is the most watchable it's ever been, no need to fire or cancel. Even better when you watch it on commercial free Hulu Plus.

Some folks need to get over themselves and take a chill pill. It's called having a different point of view: Ms. Symone' expressed her thoughts, some folks took excetion. So? confused That woman should not be fired. If folks are that pissed stop watching 'The View", problem solved. lol

I would like to know how many of the ones that signed it actually watch the show? If you do not watch it then your opinion is really meaningless... like the relgionphobic people that demeaned that Dugger show get taken off the air... most of them did not watch it so why would they care? oh well i do not watch either show so...i do not care either.

She may be wack but she is entitled to her point of view. Like you said no one forces you to watch. I know her dad lit into her ass after her mindless comments
about hiring someone with a ghetto name but yet her ass walking around with beige
sphagetti braids and dressing like a old ass Willow Smith. lol

Freedom of Speech...

If people don't like her or the show don't watch it.
Be careful, this kind of behaviour will go beyond celebs, but your FB pages and speech in general will be attacked.

This is what basically went down: Raven did agree that the officer went to far with the force, (per Raven) but you have to recognize that the student was disobeying authority and that Raven herself was taught to obey authority in school. I can't believe I'm defending Raven!

Non-story. Just hyper PC police getting it wrong. Now her name not hiring thing is what the PC police got right.

falloff

Symone' is wacky as all get out...

I don't know how we got to the point that people think there should be repercussions for every lilttle thing someone says because "you" disagree. Hell, think about it... What if these same folks jobs were in jeopardy because they expressed a not so popular point of view? If you don't agree state why and keep it moving. Good grief. Why do folks think the show is called "The View". wink lol

but the same same speech that allowes her to spout off allows people to call her out and to call to have her fired. And unless she is being threated to being arrested it is not really a free speech issue.

And people get fired all the time for stuff they say on social media.

From the link: ""The girl was told multiple times to get off the phone," Symoné said. "There's no right or reason for him to be doing this type of harm — that's ridiculous — but at the same time, you gotta follow the rules in school."

that is about spot on. It sure seems to me to be a crime for the cop to do that. No need. Whatever so called disruption she was causing was multiplied by the adults over reaction. Why not ignore her and suspended her. She'll get up an go home at some point.

in another clip 3 school police take down a girl for refusing to turn over her phone. Again same solution. Ask for the phone, tell her if you do not X will be the result. If she refuses... punish her later. Easy.

it is like a principal told me one-day: "I can not make you do anything...but I can make you wish you had"

But it is sick to see cops in school doing this to kids over stuff like this... I wonder if there actual threat in the school if they would be so big and bad then?

Hell, I agree with her but even if I didn't, she's free to say whatever the hell she wants to.

.

As for the policeman and the little heffer in the desk, yes the policeman definitely went overboard but that little defiant heffer was no sweet little angel either. They need to put paddling back in the schools. Although paddling really ain't shit but a little sting but at least it's something rather than just letting those kids run all over the teachers. I'll never forget what my mother told the principal when he called her at work and told her my sister was going to be suspended for three days for skipping classes. She said.... "Don't you dare send that heffer home, that's exactly what she wants!"..... and he said.... "Well, she's been paddled before and that hasn't worked.".....and my mother laughed and said.... "Paddled? Uh....look here, are you wearing a belt? Well, I want to to take it off and BEAT HER ASS!"....He laughed and said.... "Ma'am I'm not allowed to do that?'.... and she said.... "Oh yes you are, I give you my permission! Beat the HELL out of her! I'm tired of her thinking SHE's running things!". Of course, he refused and suspended her for three days and my mama beat that ass each of those three days. lol

Some comedian on YouTube named Watermelondra said Raven Symone looks like Big Bird dyed in blood and a mascot for Roscoe's chicken. I'm sorry, but I fell out on that one lol

...but on a serious sidenote, she is entitled to her beliefs and opinions and ABC said this is why they hired her.

still waiting to find out why the slammed student was on the phone. i've heard she had had either a serious illness or death in her family.

i want to stay neutral with raven symone's statement at this point.

I hope the following is said at every school nation wide at the next teacher meeting: "If a student is on their phone and refuses to turn it over, do not touch her or even try to take it from him or her. Just report it and then the school officials can take care of it later."

and by take care of it I mean a parent conference or suspension or whatever the school board/district has said they can do.

I disagree...

Once again an over the top reaction to something ( a young woman refusing to go to the Principle office, for texting in class) that could have all gone horribly wrong. That young woman could have injured her back, neck, or suffered a head injury. Nobody life was in jeopardy, the young woman wasn't a danger to herself, classmates, or school administrators. IF, that young woman had been seriously injured could anyone argue the police officers actions, violent actions were justified? I'd think not.

I asked my sister-in-law -who was a princple in Gary IN - for over 35 years how did they (the protocol) handled obstinate children. Her reply, "That young woman would have had to move sooner or later... changing classes, lunch , restroom, or school ending for the day." She would have been informed , a letter grade of F would be given for all classes missed that day. When she was leaving to go home, a suspension slip would have been handed to her: Her parents would have been informed why their daughter had been suspened from school. Her parents would have been told she could return to school after a princple / teacher conference had been held.

Once again who had the most to lose? The dumbass officer is now unemployed, he's lost his pension, and he lost his severance pay. More than likely his employer and the school system will be sued, its been my experience cases like these, are settled out of court.

Another thing...

This officer was fired because he didn't follow the rules or his training, What the fuck is this, police officers get to beat the shit out of people just because everyone didn't snap to it when told? That's a slipper slope in a country that known to beat, kill people of color with little provocation. Secondly, does anyone think this young woman's attitude or behavior is an anomaly? This type of behavior and worse happens everyday, Mon-Friday in US schools. Are the police suppose to have the power to punch, pull and/or throw a students for refusing to go to the school's main office?

We've had several cases this year were parents have had their children taken away from them, after they spanked or locked a kid out of the house. The very same people who justify the actions of this police officer... are the same folks (including the justice system) who are up-in-arems when parents discipline their children. confused

This silly ass hefa' was wrong as two left shoes. I suspect she was silly enough to go "there" because she knew her parents wouldn't do shit. I may be wrong but I doubt. I think Graycap, Phunkdaddy, VainAndy, and countless other on the org grew up in a time when it was 100 % guaranteed ass whoopin' if a teacher ever had to call home. But welcome to the generation of parents who have a deer in headlights attitude. Parents should get that straight way before a child even steps on to school grounds. People have accused teachers of not doing shit, when in fact they've taken on the roles of being babysitters, giving "the talk" (sex education), teaching manners, and being upaid and untrained psychiatrist / social workers.

Kudos to the Chief Of Police in this matter. I agree the police also need to be policed, pull out your phones and record. By the same token, teachers should be able pull out their phones to record children acting like fucking idiots. So, all of this "what my child wouldn't do" or that's not what my child said what happened, would cease

your sister in law is wise...that is what I said too!

I would add: the kid knew the rule, the kid chose not to obey, the teacher reminds the kid and issues a directive, the kid ignores it, an administrator reminds the kid and gives a directive... it should have ended there. Like I and the sister in law said... she'll leave at some point... why create a disruption?

to call in the officer seems to me to be too much. But in the end it was the officer that crossed the line into a crime.

*and there is a 2nd case like this. A kid got a text in class and later was asked for the phone and she admited she refused. And 3 officers took her down.

can you post the source?

maybe people like raven jumped to a conclusion instead of looking at the story from just one side, as in this current case.

Because teenagers nowadays would rather be scalped, be skinned alive, have their hands and feet chopped off, their eyelids, their nose and their lips cut off, their guts ripped out and what's left of them burned alive than having their phone taken away from them.

yeah: the teacher, hall monitor, principal, officer all say "give me the phone" and if the kids says "no" what can you do? 3 basic choices: 1) get physical 2) let it go 3) just give her the consequence

so check out this 'third' video to surface.

Published on Oct 27, 2015

Authorities said on Tuesday, a third video taken as a school resource officer slammed a student sitting at her desk at a South Carolina high school also shows her punching the deputy during the confrontation. That video — which shows the girl flailing at the officer as he is already in the middle of flipping her chair over — will play a part in the internal affairs investigation into whether Senior Deputy Ben Fields violated policy in Monday's incident at Spring Valley High School in Columbia. The first two videos of the incident, which came out and went viral on Monday, caused an uproar among social media.

dove

imo the student's arm flailing seems more like she's trying to grab at the officer to avoid hitting the floor. really does not seem that she is punching or hitting. anyway she did not make any move(s) before the officer moved on her.

the officer was totally overagressive and out of line imo.

I SEE NO PUNCHES thrown by the student.
