His remarks at the end of Chris Rock's Saturday Night Live tribute may have been too short (and serious) for fans' liking, but Eddie Murphy's has made enough punchlines in his career to receive a prestigious honor.

Today the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts announced its plans to present Murphy, the star of Beverly Hills Cop, Shrek, and Coming to America, with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. According to the news release, the annual prize is named for "a fearless observer of society, who startled many while delighting and informing many more with his uncompromising perspective on social justice and personal folly."

Previous award recipients include Tina Fey, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, and George Carlin. So as the star of Saturday Night Live, groundbreaking stand-up specials, and blockbusters, Murphy, 54, will be in good company. The gala honoring the star will be held Oct. 18 and recorded for broadcast.
