I use them for garbage bags.

I went to Boston Market yesterday (that's a chain of roasted chicken joints for those of you unfamiliar with the name)...and they packed my order in paper bags.

In fact, the last time that I went to Stop-&-Shop, they packed my groceries in old-fashioned paper bags.

Seems like the plastic bag is seeing the end of its run. nod

Sorry to hear that you get so much aggression over the plastic bags.

Not everybody knows the harming effect of it for nature, animals and humans?

Maybe it helps to put up a picture on the counter or wall to explain. If people understand why it's better they bring their own bag, in stead of wasting all that plastic, you might not get scolded at?

Or ask the shop owner to put a sticker with this tekst:

"If you don't bring your own bag, you have to buy one."

And I'm impressed that at least one state in the US starts to protect the environment from the consequences of mindless consuming.

I guess in California people face the consequences of their polluting consumerism at the moment and have to deal with drought and less water.

I get my groceries on my bike. I have a basket that I use as my grocery bag.

Sorry you have to deal with crappy people with some screwed up attitudes. The bag issue has been going on long enough for people not to act so shocked and just send a email to the company if they disagree with it instead of insulting employees. How cowardly and lazy in the age of smartphones.

Exactly.

Sorry these people what to kill the messenger.

Plastic bag facts

  • 500 billion plastic carrier bags are used worldwide each year.
  • 8 billion plastic bags were given out in 2011 in the UK.
  • Thousands of marine animals and more than 1 million birds die each year as a result of plastic pollution.
  • Plastic bags not only litter our landscape, they block drains and pipes contributing to critical conditions.
  • A plastic bag can take 1,000 years to degrade.

In the UK:

Plastic bag tax or ban?

There are already parts of the UK and Ireland that are doing their piece in reducing plastic bag usage.

The Republic of Ireland has charged a plastic bag tax since 2002.

Last year Wales introduced a plastic bag charge of 5p per single use plastic bag.

Northern Ireland has rolled out a tax of 5p per plastic bag since the begining of April 2013.

Scotland are in serious discussions to introduce the tax/levy.

If Conservatives get in then I'm sure England will tax the plastic bag.

Maybe you can put up one of these photo's on your boot.

So folks understand why their plastic bag is not harmless.

Yes. However, the good news is that people are becoming aware of their own contribution to these problems now.

I really think there are positive changes incorporated at the moment.

Charging ten cents for a bag, is a great accomplishment and will have great positive consequences for the environment.

I can't speak to ALDI's policy, I've never been to their store. In speaking to Cinny's point of view, about carrying your own cloth shopping bag.... could and would eventually stir-up some nonsense in the States. That's just the way it is... this isn't anything new.

Trina, it is a matter of what type of store you are shopping in.

At most supermarkets, and certain environmentally-conscious stores such as IKEA, bringing your own reusable bags is ENCOURAGED. In fact there's a store I went to (Stop-&-Shop?) that actually pays you 10ยข for every bag you bring.

Then there are stores where customers bringing in their own bags would be a security nightmare. I can't see Best Buy or Bed, Bath & Beyond for example, encouraging that. I assume that Crate & Barrel falls under that category (plus of course your skin tone has to be taken into account lol ).

But in the end, it seems that those cheap plastic shopping bags are becoming a thing of the past.

I wasn't the only person walking out of Crate & Barrell with bags in my hand, but I was stopped. wink As I said, par the course in the country. Yes, it can and does happen often everyhwere in the USA... the disconnect of what doesn't happen in this country never ceases to amaze me.
