Super Bowl XLIX was the most-viewed television program in history

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/super-bowl-sets-viewership-record-161138960.html

After all the scandals, after deflate-gate and concussion crises and videotapes and suspensions, know this: the NFL is unstoppable. The Super Bowl delivered its highest ratings ever, according to initial overnight numbers from NBC. Later numbers comfirmed: Super Bowl XLIX was the most-viewed television program in history.

The Patriots-Seahawks showdown enjoyed a 49.7 rating. In other words, 49.7 percent of the homes that had televisions on had them tuned to the Super Bowl. That's an astounding number, ten times the size of even the most popular TV shows, and it's exactly why advertisers are willing to fork out $4.5 million for 30 seconds' worth of ad time.

An average of 114.4 million people watched the Super Bowl last night, making it the most-viewed program in American history. The highest point? From 9:45 to 10 p.m. ET, in the fourth quarter, when viewership peaked at 120.8 million viewers. This is why networks pay so much for live sports, and why advertisers pay so much to be a part of it all.
