According to what I found on the web, there is a way to make "healthier" smoothies:

Yep, fruits are loaded with sugar. Even if they're natural.

Yeah, a blender does the trick. Fuck all those other gimmicks and juicers. Just go to Target or Wall Mart and get a blender. I make kale or spinach smooties with almond milk, protein powder, chia seeds, blueberries and a tablespoon of almond butter. It's pretty good. The kale gives it an extra crunch if you like that. If I am out of blueberries I use a banana. If I'm out of almond butter I use peanut butter. I use it for a snack before I go to the gym. I got the recipe online somewhere. I think they call it a kale smoothie. It beats your typical American snacks by a mile.

well, that's one of the advantages of making your own home made smoothie. just choose the fruits (and/or veggies) of choice and do not add sugar.

me i make my own smoothies

strawberries

1/3 cup blue berries

1 banana

1/2 cup orange juice

1/2 cup apple cider

lots of ice (about 10 cubes)

then blend.

dwa la "no sugar."

('cept for the fruit's natural sugar content)

Yeah, I think these are way over priced. I see them in Costco on demo sometimes, but at $600, that's a bit too rich for a freakin blender. Doesn't that Ninja thing do about the same thing?

True. I've heard that natural sugar is better for you than processed sugar. Not sure if there is any truth to that or not.

i was curious about your truth or not line so i looked and found this.

link: http://www.builtlean.com/...sed-sugar/

Processed sugar, referred to scientifically as “sucrose”, is not only totally devoid of nutrients, but has added chemicals and raises blood sugar levels faster so you get energy/hunger swings. Think white table sugar, sugar in candy bars, or added sugar in fruit drinks.

Regarding “natural” sugar, all plants produce sugar as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Fruits and vegetables have sugar in the form of fructose, which is broken down more slowly by the body than sucrose. In addition, fruits and veggies boast vitamins and minerals also have fiber to slow down the digestion of their natural sugars, which leads to more stable blood sugar levels.

I've tasted a few from mall outlets that cater to the smoothies folks. Was wondering if it is worthwhile using a home blender........... are home smoothies healthy? meaning no bad calories...........

I would prefer fruit. Not mixing fruit and veggies.

Anyone with smoothie knowledge??? anyone bueller, bueller???..........

Standard mall smoothies are often over-priced, refined sugar bombs. I'd skip them unless you knew only good stuff was going into them. I've seen "tropical fruit shake" stands that don't have any actual fruit at all confused

Get a cheap blender, try out mixing some fruits you like and if you are enjoying it, invest in a better blender later.. If you like real fruit, I don't see what's not to like about a smoothie.

If you will, so will I

Natural sugar is better for you. But sugar will still turn into fat and make you fatter. That's my only point. razz

A friend of mine kept jucing carrots and drank only carrot juice for weeks but didn't lose any weight and wondered why. My opinion is that it's because the carrots have lots of sugar and that's the reason why she couldn't lose the weight.

I made a HUGE mistake making smoothies out of fruit only.

Fruits are high in sugar, and you tend to consume tons of sugar in a full 8-10 ounce glass of fruit smoothie.

So I reccommend mixing it with yogurt/veggies and not just straight fruit, unless you want to do what I did and have a sugar rush so bad it could make you diabetic.

my smoothies consisted of mango, apple, pineapple, orange, banana, pear, berries, and every other ripe fruit.

DANGEROUS because the calorie count is huge and so is your sugar intake.

Oh yea, 3,000 calories in a tall glass... GREAT way to get the shits and get fat. thumbs up!

It is better to eat an orange whole and drink water. Eat an apple whole, and drink water.

It will be more satisfying and you can control your hunger better.

I make smoothies like I cook...everything goes in...it's got to taste good though. Oatmeal, banana, yogurt, cinnamon, raisins, flac seed, whole wheat, berries, a small amount of ginger.

.

One time I did a carrot, ginger, onion "clean out" smoothie and threw up in the sink. TMI, I know. The funny part was the look on me and my wifes face and she ran past me to the toliet.
.
I don't care what anybody says, Kale is a vile weed that should not be eaten. Greens, Spinach and everything else, just not that.

Jack Lalanne has good choices. He's like the 'George Foreman grills' of juicers I guess.

Love the juice. But the taking apart & cleaning the machine is a pain. That is the number one hindrance, I found for me, with the entire process of juicing and smoothies, the freakin' clean up. Occasionally is one thing, but the added time to ones daily routine can feel like another tedious chore.

I agree with notSusan to clean the blender right away. After the pour, fill the blender almost to halfway with water and a tiny bit of dish liquid. Do not overflow, yikes. Blend it. It turns your blender into it's own washing machine. Wipe/rinse. bananadance

My daughter is addicted to the blueberry-pomegranate smoothies from McDonalds. Seriously, it's all she ever wanted.

Had to have an intervention ("No, I am not driving to McDonalds at 11:30pm to get you a smoothie no matter how much you pout & give me those sad eyes.")

I would make a smoothie with all fruit totalling up to a tall glass... 10 ounces... maybe 12?

Maybe not 3,000 calories, but enough to make me get dizzy after drinking it. NEVER had I had that iissue with anything before or after eating/drinking other smoothies that included yogurt/milk/vegetable blends

a straight fruit one spiked my sugars and made me gain weight like crazy.

I used a juicer. a pinaapple, mango, a banana, an apple and two oranges usually. THAT is a lot of sugar to chug down daily.

People need to be more careful recommending all fruit smoothies to folks. Best to blend in veggies or yogurt... plus the smoothies still taste great with out the light-headed feeling.

Not a good thing when you hit your 40's and your body can't handle high sugar intake.
