Tokyo Story (Yasujiro Ozu: 1953)

It's fascinating to me to see the depths our idealism takes when confronted with the mortality of others (not much different than the last movie I watched, "The Sons of Katie Elder", just perhaps more consistently wise). There simply isn't time for any us to be everything to everyone (most people wouldn't want that pressure we put on ourselves anyway). But there is always time to be more selfless, more humble.

A simple, deeply reflective film about generational difference, the march of progress, and the simple acts of kindness that bind us all to our deeply connected struggles and passions that we far too often allow to isolate, then divide.

Gone Girl (2014)

Stop The Presses!!!! I seperated myself from my couch and went the movies lol

Gone Girl : * 1/2 stars rating

This movie was awful, the premise was far fetched, and the acting in spots was horrible. If the producers thought Gone Girl's non-formaulaic Hollywood ending gave their movie some cred, nope. lol Its an insult to some folks intellegence...

Cable or XBMC (via net)... I'd wait. lol

Fantastic movie. The Blu-ray release was announced a few weks after I watched the movie on DVD for the first time so I'd like to see it again in HD.

Lucy (2014) - A woman, accidentally caught in a dark deal, turns the tables on her captors and transforms into a merciless warrior evolved beyond human logic.

Totally ridiculous, but I did enjoy some of it. star star 1/2

Roger & Me 4/5 I wanted to go back to the start of Michael Moore's career. This is a funny movie, especially the bunny lady. But it's deeply sad at the same time.

I can relate. Not that I need an excuse, but I have used and will continue to use the HD reasoning to re-watch a lot of things. I saw "Tokyo Story" streaming in 1080p. Not quite the same luxury as Blu-ray but quite nice.

Hector and the Search for Happiness

This was whimsical and pleasant enough, ultimately it was a bit weak and clichéd. Despite giving me the feeling that I was watching Eat, Pray, Love; I at least enjoyed this and got a few laughs

When Björk Met Attenborough (2013) / Björk: Biophilia Live (2014)

This was a double feature at the IFC Center of Björk's conversation with David Attenborough about her Biophilia album and music in general followed by the Biophilia concert film. Both are must-sees for Björk fans of course. The concert film with the Icelandic choir and Tesla instruments especially are a visual treat. Begin Again

2/5

I love Catherine Keener, she's on my it list, so I watched this, but it was ruined by 2 people from my shit list, Keira Knightlley and Mark Ruffalo neutral

oh and Adam Levine's beard also ruined it.

I'd sort of liked that movie ONCE, and this felt like an extension of the same concept - singers write and sing songs with a loose plot lol

I'm the mistake you wanna make

Skeleton Twins (2014)

Solid performances by Kristen Wiig, and especially Bill Hader. Luke Wilson deserves credit for a nice turn as Wiig's husband.

Gun Crazy (1950)

Gun Crazy (1950)

Perhaps this is what a B movie dreams when it sleeps at night. Like an extended "Leave It to Beaver" episode shot with on-the-lam backseat adrenaline and just-one-more-heist-till-happily-ever-after storybook ripped from the pulp of a crime thriller.

Perhaps of its ilk (film noir) this is one of the gold standards. And perhaps it's little more than a sappy message about the dangers of obsession.

But to me it's the kind of sap you pour over your morning pancakes while wiping the crust from the corners of last night's drama.

Gone Girl – I went to a ‘baby-friendly’ showing, the only screening open during my afternoon off. No problem with the babies – they were mostly fine, and the parents dutifully took their kids outside if they started to fuss – but the volume was lowered to the extent I could barely make out whispered dialogue. That really diminished the impact of the score and kinda neutered a few fairly critical scenes.

I’d still give it a 4/5 – I thought it pretty skillfully trod a line between being an attempt at some form of statement (mostly a feminist one, I thought, not a view shared by some & I think some of those arguments are pretty good too) and full-on camp farce. Misanthropes & fatalists might love it.

The wife of a publishing executive mistakenly believes that her husband's relationship with his attractive secretary is more than professional.

I could barely concentrate on anything these women were saying because their God awful eyebrows were so distracting.

I also could not stand how this dude treated both the wife and the secretary. Ugh.

A beautifully shot and enjoyable flick. Drags some between the 2d and 3d acts. Tony Leung and Ziyi Zhang really need to be seen more here, they're incredible actors.

The Sacrament (2013)

Being dropped into a Jonestown-like massacre filled me with Kool-aid. Then the second half dropped on me.

Stilled enjoyed, kind of like a video game. Depth gone, but palms all sweaty.

2.8/5. It was OK as far as stories go but it lied or maybe really stretched the truth to make the situation sound better than it was. Which really was unnecessary since her situation was so unique that her life was bound to be much more privileged than most regardless. But then its movie making, it either has to be better or worse than the reality. She looks sooooo much like Kerry Washington it kind of tripped me out.

Men, Women, and Children

A color-by-numbers downer film, with too many subplots and not enough character depth.I give it credit for being a sadly accurate snapshot of modern interactions though.

Mrs. Browns Boys: D'movie 4 / 10

If you like the TV series then this is probably much along the same lines. I hate the show but watched this movie with company who like the show. One or two giggles but pretty weak. It's hugely popular so many like it.
