Danish zoo at heart of giraffe uproar kills 4 lions, citing generational shift

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A Danish zoo that faced protests for killing a healthy giraffe to prevent inbreeding says it has put down four lions, including two cubs, to make room for a new male lion.

Citing the "pride's natural structure and behavior," the Copenhagen Zoo said Tuesday that two old lions had been euthanized as part of a generational shift. It said the cubs were also put down because they were not old enough to fend for themselves and "anyway would have been killed by the new male lion."

Zoo officials hope the new male and two females born in 2012 will form the nucleus of a new pride.

Last month the zoo triggered a wave of protests by killing a 2-year-old giraffe, and feeding its remains to the lions as visitors watched.

The whole idea of a zoo is pretty strange, they just lock animals up for entertainment of people.

That said, i don´t get how people can get upset when lions are killed when we are killing pigs, chickens and cows by millions....

I agree that zoo's are pretty strange. Not a fan of them.

Having said that, much of the world is eating pigs, chickens and cows. I don't know anyone that eats lions.

I really find it weird that this zoo cant for some reason find other places to place these animals instead of just kill them route. I understand that a new male lion would kill the cubs which is natural as well as probably kill the older ones, but I'm sure other zoos or even perserves could find room for them.

It just seems like the easy way out. confused

I hate zoos and circuses. However, I agree with your other point. I can't get upset about this. Why are these animals more important than any other ones?

In the wild, old lions are being chased away from their pride by younger males who take over the lionesses and kill all the cubs so that they can breed with with the lionesses and raise new cubs. The older male will wander around until he either starves or is killed by hyenas or something. That's nature for ya, folks.
I have no problem with zoos as long as the animals are well fed and taken care of. My love for nature and animals started when my parents took me to zoos (or actually, I took my parents!) as a child.

I'm sure it isn't. No zoo does this for fun. They must have tried everything else. Transporting animals to another zoo is pretty difficult if all are full.

agree. the animals within get a lousy bargain; the least we could do is refrain from randomly popping them. why not transfer them somewhere? money could have been raised on kickstarter or something.

And zoos shouldn't allow them to breed if they can't support the offspring or, worse, get rid of the parents in order to keep the offspring.

Zoos are in the business of preserving the species which does not have to include each and every individual animal. Hey, I don't like this any more than you do, but sometimes it's just a dilemma.
