Can you make it without Sun Java and/or Adobe Flash Player?

I'll be dead honest. Using my desktop and laptop without Sun Java is the easy part since most websites don't use it. cool

But life without Adobe Flash Player has been very difficult. disbelief Yes, HTML5 has improved to where I can watch any videos from YouTube without a need for Flash anymore. But there are too many websites that still use Flash for videos & graphic designs. This is terrible because Flash was suppose to be on its last leg in the tech world, yet it's still a popular choice in the entertainment industry (including the adult entertainment industry).

For privacy AND security purposes, I'm doing my best to stay away from Adobe Flash Player. But it gets more difficult by the week. sad

So what's your take on Java & Flash?

Can't do without them. Absolutely horrible to update and should have been axed out of the Internet ages ago. At one point everyone was complaining about them and they were on their way out, but for some reason they were suddenly back everywhere.

I admit that I really don't even know where the Java libraries, and whatever is needed to display the various web pages and applications that need them. are located in the Linux file system. Thank God for Firefox still running without problems on my system, although I haven't upgraded in years. confused

On my laptop, I'm using Debian Sid. Firefox stable is at v26 and it's worth the upgrade, although I had to get it from LMDE repos due to the fact that I prefer (the real) Firefox instead of Iceweasel from Debian repos. wink

Oh, I meant that I haven't upgraded the OS (Debian Squeeze-based), the kernel or many of the most important libraries in years myself. Firefox currently updates itself on my system automatically.

Now I'd just need to figure out why some files on soundcloud won't work while some do. It's exactly that type "half-functional" nonsense that drives me nuts sometimes. confused

Both are a major pain in the ass, especially with Chrome. But I must admit that I am a computer illiterate, so there´s that. lol

The org is a great place to find answers to computer related questions. Imago, TonyVanDam, Novabrkr etc. etc. have often posted stuff here that´s been very useful for me.

You guys are great, keep doing what you´re doing.

nod thumbs up!

I can't use Adobe on my tablet. I have other browsers I can use, but I know I'm so far away from security and privacy. Personally, I don't see the difference between the government having access versus a private entity having access to my cyberspace movements, neither are doing it for my personal benefit.

HTML5 is way better than Flash. But most websites have yet to make the switch.

Actually, I highly recommend first time Linux users to try Linux Mint or LMDE. It's great for beginners. wink

I'm bumping THIS thread on purpose to give an update.....

So far, I've lasted just over 2 months in life without Sun Java & Adobe Flash Player. But life without Flash has come with a ultimate price: No internet radio! sad

No Pandora Radio. No Slacker Radio. No Musicovery. Nothing.

But at least I still have YouTube with html5. cool Now if there was a way to get Dailymotion to work via html5.... hmmm
