Interesting facts about Austria

Modern Austria is the German-speaking part of the Austrian (later Austro-Hungarian) Empire ruled by the Habsburg family from 1526 to 1918. The Austrian flag is one of the oldest national flag in the world. It dates from 1191, when Duke Leopold V fought in the Battle of Acre during the Third Crusade. The world's largest emerald (2860 carat) is displayed in the Imperial Treasury of the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) in Vienna. Schönbrunn Palace, the summer palace of the Habsburgs, has no less than 1,440 rooms. The sewing machine was invented in 1818 by Josef Madersperger, an Austrian. The oldest zoological garden in the world is the Tiergarten Schönbrunn in Vienna, founded in 1752. Founded in 803 as Stiftskeller St. Peter, Haslauer is the world's oldest inn/restaurant still in operation, and the oldest company in Europe. Vienna's Central Cemetery (Zentralfriedhof) has over 2.5 million tombs (more than the city's live population), including those of Beethoven, Brahms, Gluck, Schubert, Schoenberg and Strauss.

omfg - THIS after I just posted about Oheka on here!!! disbelief

Report: Oheka Castle Owner Gary Melius Shot by Masked Gunman

Melius reportedly in stable condition after being shot Monday afternoon.

Gary Melius, the owner of Huntington's Oheka Castle, was shot Monday afternoon at the historic hotel and catering hall, according to published reports.

PIX11 reported that Melius was shot outside of the castle by a masked gunman. The report says the attack was caught on surveillance video and shows a fleeing vehicle that police are currently searching for.

Melius, 69, was shot in the face and is currently in stable condition at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, according to a New York Post report.

The Post, citing law enforcement sources, reported that shooting may have been "a botched hit."

Melius, who is well-connected politically and has donated large sums to both parties, purchased the castle as a dilapidated property in 1984 for $1.5 million.

Today, the castle, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has 32 luxury guest rooms and suites, and hosts weddings, celebrations and public events. The castle's guest list has included Charlie Chaplin, Bill Clinton, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.

I have a question for you;

Being as how Austria and Hungary were for so long united as an empire...do modern-day Austrians and Hungarians share any sort of "camaraderie" or "kinship"? Do you share any aspects of your cultures?

As I am Austrian too I am gonna answer even if the question wasn't for me wink : No "camaraderie" that I ever noticed. The architecture is similar (Budapest reminds me a lot of Vienna for example) and the food too and there are some Hungarians living In Austria and Austrians like to go shopping or getting their hair done in Hungary and lately Hungarians like going shopping here in Austria as well, but apart from that not much comes to my mind. I guess it might be because the language is so compeltely different.

Hardly. Most people on both sides are too uneducated to know about our history or are simply completely ignorant towards it. Furthermore, our cultures have grown over the past 90 years quite radically, especially through political and economic differences. With their stupid, populistic, fascist leader now, things aren't looking to improve on that side either, unfortunately...

Must be mentioned, though, that we're in a good position to be self-ironical, because, let's be honest, Austria is probably one of the best countries in the world to live in, if not the best.
