musical artists who make movies/projects outside of their known genre

watching Idlewild on hbo and asking myself why this movie failed so miserably at the height of the outkast era. of course a comparison to under the cherry moon comes to mind, but why do fans turn their backs on projects that show a different aspect of their favorite artists?

It's a fine line, but fans don't always turn their backs. If an artist flirts with something new, I think their fans like it. But more often what happens is the artist turns their back on what made them beloved in the first place. It's as if an artist discovers what they are best at, then refuses to do it.

BTW I never saw Idlewild, so I don't know anything about it
