No.

The answer is just "No".

"American Hustle" is not very good. The acting is awesome, but the story really - and I mean REALLY - requires you to not think about what's happening. Plus, its depiction of the '70's is not very accurate. For instance, there isn't ONE 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix shown in the whole movie! What kind of movie set in 1978 doesn't feature the greatest two-door sedan ever made?!? It's these kinds of overlooked, obvious details that screw up "American Hustle". Also, the music sucks. And I mean it REALLY sucks. As a child of the '70's, I am crushed that they didn't hire me to tell them what music to play. I'm guessing they hired some dude whose uncle wrote half the junky songs they used in the movie. That's the only explanation for how most of those songs made it into a big-time Hollywood movie.

I don't have to see "August: Osage County" to tell you that no one gets blown away by Arnold Schwarzenegger; no one gets eaten by a really cool monster; and no one flies an F/A-18 Hornet underneath the Golden Gate Bridge. So if you know none of those things will happen, you have to ask yourself, "Will this movie just suck, or will it suck humungously?"

The answer probably is "Humunguously". So go see "Lone Survivor" instead.

.

EXACTLY.

American Huslte is just "meh". First the characters of Bradley cooper & J Law are the same characters of those two in SLP, Jen the hot bitch whose ready to do anything to have what she wants to have, Bradley the crazy ass dude yet not easy to seduce. What the fuck? Even if SLP is a better movie, I still don't think why people look at AH as some kind of BEST movie. It isn't, all this media coverage and hype is because they got along with "Hey let's give O russell his shot".

As of August Osage County, it's a nice film, you'd certainly be blown away by Meryl Streep's performance and acting, amazing how she stills deliver quality performances after all these years & success.

Hustle reminded me of a great Scorsese film. So if that is your kind of film and you want to see great acting - you can't lose. I bet Osage County is good too but have not seen it yet. The music in American Hustle is decent. I loved the flow of the film. For me Amy Adams was the best but the others were great as well. Usually I don't follow awards shows but they are right about this one.

What I am talking about is the soundtrack was in no way representative of any part of the 1970's, much less 1978.

Just because some of those songs existed in 1978 doesn't mean they were played much. I was 19 years old in 1978, and I still remember it. Trust me - the songs from that movie were NOT what we were listening to. Not even close.

And that song by ELO - "Long Black Road"? Not only had I never heard it before, I had never even heard OF it until that movie. C'mon!

Houston, Texas. I made mixtapes for the guys on our basketball team that were from NYC. They loved them.

Well, there's your answer. The reason why they loved your tapes was because the music they heard in New York was most likely what was played in the movie which takes place in NY.

I concur. American Hustle sucked royally. I was dosing off during the first hour! I'll say the only good thing was that Bradley Cooper was hilarious but that's about it. I haven't seen August: Osage County, so that may be a better choice.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I agree with some here. I'm really surpised American Hustle has received so many nominations everywhere. The cast is fantastic and the acting superb, but the movie itself - the story, the dialogue and the rest - is just... OK. How it can be nominated for Best Picture is a bit of a mystery to me.

Not at all. I think the soundtrack is great. I'm saying the reason why you never heard the songs in the movie is most likely because you didn't grow up in the tri-state area where the movie takes place.

Maybe not, but I grew up in the '70's. I was 19 in 1978. I was familiar with every song in the top 10 of every weekly Billboard chart (all formats), from about 1974 until about 1992 or so. And I'm here to tell you, the songs in "American Hustle" were NOT the songs of 1978.

ELO and Jeff Lynne just weren't all that popular. I suspect the film maker is a friend of Jeff Lynne's. It's the only explanation that fits.

My experience with NYC music is that NYC got the best music first, then it spread across the nation. This was mostly true in disco and R&B, not as much in rock (except for punk).

I guess it's possible that crappy music premiered and died in NYC, never making it to the rest of us.

I don't know... The Hobbit would have been a more worthy nomination, imo. shrug

These national top 20 songs were used in the movie:

"A Horse With No Name" - America - #1

"Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?" - Chicago - #7

"I Saw The Light" - Todd Rundgren - #16

"I Feel Love" - Donna Summer - #6

"Delilah" - Tom Jones - #15

"Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" - Elton John - #2

"Papa Was A Rollin' Stone" - The Temptations - #1

"Evil Ways" - Santana - #9

"How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" - The Bee Gees - #1

"Live And Let Die" - Paul McCartney & Wings - #2

Not all from 1978 sure, but radio always plays recurrents so older hits from the 70s I think fit right in.

My point exactly!

Sure, those songs were played from time to time in 1978. But the odds of hearing all those songs in any particular week, or even month, were pretty dang low. Like I said, that soundtrack just doesn't represent what we were listening to in 1978.

And do you see any ELO/Jeff Lynne songs on your list? LOL, no you don't. No disrespect to ELO, but they just weren't that big a part of the '70's.

And I GUARANTEE you that NO ONE other than a diehard ELO fan ever heard "Long Black Road" before.
