Saturday Night Live sketch that got Damon Wayans fired
http://screen.yahoo.com/m...00931.html
This is the much talked about sketch that Damon Wayans improvised and got oited by Lorne Michaels. It doesn't really look that bad, but hey you can't improvise on SNL.
Damon plays the character similar to In Living Color and Beverly Hills Cop.
If only Lorne knew what he had ... oh well huh. PRINCE: Always and Forever

That was a weak year for SNL. Everyone was new and overall not a very funny season except for Jon Lovitz. Everyone got fired except for Jon Lovitz, Dennis Miller and Nora Dunn.

YIKES! I would have fired him, too. That was terrible! I don't recall Damon being on the show. He seemed VERY unseasoned. What year was this? "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

He was the token black guy to take Eddie's place. He acted that way on purpose. He wasn't getting any air time. PRINCE: Always and Forever

He was one of those "featuring" cast members. Everyone got fired except for 3 people.

part of the story too, is that that was the year terry sweeney was on. terry sweeney was the first openly gay SNL actor in the show's history. i think he was also one of the first openly gay people on TV. he would also remain the only one in the history of SNL until last year when lorne added kate mckinnon. (who is killing it on the show this season, btw) damon was annoyed he wasnt getting on the show much. so he decided to go out in a blaze of glory. he went on air and changed the script live. he did the dress rehearsal the right way, then suddenly surprised everyone by doing that effeminate gay voice sterotype. it is the cardinal rule of SNL: you dont change the script on air. it's why martin lawrence and adrian brody (among others) are banned from SNL as well. it was also kind of rude to do to terry. first openly gay SNL actor, and one of the first openly gay men on TV (in the midst of the AIDS panic, by the way), and damon suddenly flips out and does gay stereotype as a big fuck you to everyone at SNL. I remember Terry. He did a great parody of Joan Rivers. And didn't he do Nancy Regan? They really didn't give him the air time he deserved. I don't recall hearing anything else from him after he left the show. [Edited 12/26/13 18:09pm] "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I didn't know about Sweeney part.
But I'm not sure if Damon did that as a F-U to Sweeney more so than a F-U to the show. He'd done that gay character before on Beverly Hills Cop a few years before he got on SNL.
Little known fact: Keenen auditioned for SNL the year Eddie Murphy got chosen. Actually, Keenen Robert Townsend and Charlie Barnett auditioned the year Eddie got on. PRINCE: Always and Forever

(but its been a few years since i read it) Looking up that seasons cast Danitra Vance was also a gay cast member. And i heard Chase was not liked by anyone. danitra was the first black woman to ever be cast. ive only heard very small mention of her as a gay woman, and always after her death in the mid 90s... so i dont think she ever officially came out if she was a lesbian. as such, its hard to count her as openly gay when she wasn't, particularly when terry was openly gay. more similar to danitra is chris kattan, who is long and widely rumored to be gay (more than danitra ever was), yet avoids coming out. i dont personally know it to be true, but... i cant imagine many people that would be shocked by that. danitra (like marlon) was severely under-utilized to the point is is difficult to find video of her on SNL. she (like all of the cast that year, excepting lovitz, dunn, and miller) were let go after 1 season. chase is notoriously a prick, and disliked by almost every cast that ever had to endure him, particularly during his ego-driven and cocaine-fueled 80s. reading the book, you get the sense he was the most egotistical and annoying cast member, particularly for only having done 1 season. bill murray and john lovitz (as well as the first cast that had to endure chevy) have some really choice things to say about him, but they are far from few. there really arent a lot of people outside of lorne who had a lot of positive things to say about chase. i remember the editors on the book doing promotion saying they were kind of afraid to run into chevy, based on how much of the book ended up being about what a prick he is... but nearly everyone he crossed paths with had a "chevy is a prick" story. . Not the greatest sketch ever, but it didn't seem like Damon went over the top. He seemed to stick to his lines, at least. The voice might have thrown off the other actors, perhaps, but I guess I expected something more outrageous based on the headline. My Legacy
