A PSA: Unclaimed Property

You all need to contact your state and see if you have any unclaimed property(UCP).

What's UCP? From my end, it's checks sent out to folks from businesses that for whatever reason they don't cash. Eventually all businesses are to turn that money over to the states who hold on to it until whoever the funds belong to show up and claim it. (Not only check, insurance and all kinds of stuff).

Why am I bring this up? Because I do a lot of paperwork involving it and it just amazes me how many people don't cash their checks. Sometimes there are some pretty big sums.

No, I don't work for the state so I have no idea the volume of paperwork that they must receive, I just work for one business and it amazes me from our end how much money we turn over. States are collecting millions of other people's money and they don't even know it. I have to read their websites and that's what they say from all over the country, they collect millions.

And this goes for you overseas folks who have ever worked (lived, conducted business, have relatives in the states who may have passed on, whatever) in the States. I get several people who's last known address is in another country that have money that has to be turned over to the state. Not just my state but all 50 of them, Puerto Rico, Guam and all them too.

Unfortunately, I'm chintzy I cash every single check with my name on it, I never have unclaimed property, but the odds are you just might.

You might have enough sitting out there to pay this month's light bill. That's got to be worth the effort.

I don't know, I have a really high light bill. Texas, and August, and all that.

My uncle told my parents about it, and my Mom got a check from NJ for $118.

After that, my sister convinced me to try, and I just got a letter on Monday, stating that $1146. will be here in 2-3 weeks. faint

I found some money for friends and relatives a few years back researching unclaimed property websites on their behalf. It was several years ago. I should probably go back and research some more. I remember seeing some unclaimed money out there for Prince back then as well but I had no way to tell him. shrug Guess he'll have to find out for himself. wink

If you've ever lived in (or done business in) another state (other than the one you currently live in), be sure to check those states out too cuz there could be money there as well.

A half a tank of gas? Okay, maybe a quarter tank. Worth it?

Not everybody has anything. I sure as heck didn't. But I know we send estate checks, payroll, refunds checks. I've seen places for security funds, banks having to send in funds from closed accounts, gift cards, etc.

No shit, my Sister just got a notice in the mail from the State of California that she has almost $900 of unclaimed wages from MANY YEARS ago when she was fighting to get some pay owed to her by Mervynn's. I've checked for myself from time to time, so I know there's nothing there (nor should there be). But I agree that anyone who hasn't checked should definitely do so.
