10 episodes a season

HBO's True Blood cut its season six from 12 episodes to 10. (BOO!) At first it was said it was because Anna Paquin had given birth to twins so they were going to push back the beginning of filming from November to January.
*
Then rumblings began that it was done to reduce costs, as each episode is expensive to produce, and that other shows would be going from 12 episodes to 10.
*
IMHO, that is ridiculous! That is not enough time to do any type of character or story development. Plus, ten weeks of episodes & 10 months of waiting for the next season?!? No thank you! It's bad enough as it is now!
*
I do hope it is not true. I'd hate to see two less episodes happen to Game of Thrones! Having two less episodes of True Blood is bawl .
*
I will say, it does make me hesitant to start watching any new shows that run on this format.

All 3 seasons of Game of Thrones have been 10 episodes. The Newsroom was designed for 10 episode seasons but season 2 got cut down to 9 cause Sorkin had to start over. Boardwalk Empire and True Blood have always been 12 but True Blood still gets outstanding ratings even if they aren't quite as high as the last couple years so they shouldn't need to slash budgets.

For fuck's sake JoeT, a person can read books AND watch television, sometimes even at the same time.

HA! Are they? I've never counted the episodes for GoT.

I guess I just hate the trend of these really short seasons in general.

I read somewhere that Roseaane Barr is working on a 10 episode deal with a network, so this could be the new thing.

With the success of netflix's House of Cards, Arrested Developemnt and Orange is the New Black the future may be just to dump the whole season in one swoop and let the audience binge watch.

I believe that is what's known as a 10/90 deal. If the 10 episodes you make get good enough ratings then you are renewed for 90 more episodes. That's what they did with Charlie Sheen's Anger Management on FX and some Tyler Perry sitcoms on TBS.
