Catty question

So, my dear cat has killed an adult duck, a young bird, a few mice, and maybe even more that I don't know about.

He does not kill because he's hungry. I feed him well.

He just kills because he can. Opportunity makes the killer.

Does that make him a bad cat?

The fact that he's a serial killer, does not make me love him any less. I still adore him.

Does that say anything about the good of my character? That I adore my serial killer cat?

It doesn't make him a bad cat. It just makes him a cat.

My cat doesn't go outside, so he hasn't killed any birds, but I love his killer instincts when it comes to bugs and vermin.

That's what cats do. It's a part of their instincts.

Keep your cat indoors. It's best for them and they live longer. smile

It's a myth that cats "need" to go outdoors. I've had cats for years and none of them have ever had the least desire to go outdoors (escape out the door etc.). I open windows for them so they can spend time with nature (so to speak), have toys, play with them, snuggle with them, etc. Honestly, it's best for cats to stay in.

*

I love my cats too much to ever see them hit by a car, poisoned, get into bad fights with other animals / cats, get lost, get stolen, pick up diseases, etc.

They're very precious to me. heart

Domestic cats are so far from natural I agree with tempest that they can stay indoors. My 2 toy dogs - same. Their wildest instincts are pretty weak at best. As long as they have each others butts to sniff and a window to look out they are happy. They love to run so outings to dog park are regular, but cats seem able to run up and down hallways to expend their surplus energy LOL
I'm the mistake you wanna make

Seems like your cats killer instinct has grown to hunting bigger and larger creatures

And also....

Pets are like kids u love them no matter what they do

If your cat is used to being outside its going to be difficult to turn it into an indoor pet

If its not wearing a bell. Get one !!! And speak to your pet shop and see what else u can get or do!

Rip ducky

Cats and dogs natural instincts are to hunt. If you don't want them killing anything, don't allow them outdoors unchaperoned. Not the greatest idea to allow your cats to roam anyway. Anything can happen to them.

Of course not. Good or bad are human concepts. And humans are hunters too, by the way. Cats and dogs are predators, not teddy bears.

Let my tell you of how my cat, Angel, and I got together.

I wanted to get a cat, but I wanted to test that idea first.

(could I take care of a cat, did I still want it when reality kicked in, could I handle the responsebility?)

I became a temporary adoption mother for Angel.

Boy bought it for his girlfriend, and then they moved to another place, no cat allowed.

So cat stayed with other people, until they would find another house.

Nobody wanted Angel, because he would drive them crazy within a few days, because of his constant miauwing.

So, they dropped him off at my place and he was supposed to stay for 2-3 months.

Nobody wanted to visit anymore, because Angel was just miauwing 24/7. driving everybody crazy.

So, i decided to let him outside.

Since that day we are a happy team.

Now, 8 years later, we still are very happy togehter.

I really love his character and we share the same taste in music.

This is no joke. He lies in front of the speakers or radio when his favorite cd's or station is on.

When I went searching for a new house, Angel his needs were on my list.

So, I got a ground floor house, because he will go insane (and me too) when he can't go outside.

There are no cars allowed in my area. And on a busy day, there have passed 10 people my house. He is chipped and he gets regular check ups at the pet docter.

So, all in all, I really make an effort to meet his need for the outside and my need for him being save.

He does not go outside that much. He is where I am, and when he's outside, he hangs around the house. He does not go far.

It's jsut that when he's listening to music, and a bird will sqeeuk and skreel and ruin the opera or jazz piece he's into, he has no mercy.

You guys may think this is a joke.

It's not. He gets extremely kranky from music or sounds he does not like.

Aggressive even.

So, I agree wholeheartedly that cats not neccesarely need to be outside.

In the winter, when we are looking to the seaguls sitting in the snow, I don't get the impression my cat would want the non domesticated life. Au contraire.

However, Angel really can't be contrived.

And I love him as he is. I dig his character and this is part of it.

In his defense, that duck did make a lot of noice all day.

Not that I aprove of his irreseversable method to shut the duck up.

I guess I just have to come to terms with loving and living with a killer.

And because it's a cat, I can.

I have turned kids with behavioral problems in sweet pussy cats wink

I'm not giving in and I'm really not that sensitive for emotional manipulation.

But, I never managed to get him wearing anything.

It has lead to huge fights, my curtains ripped, etc. And when I onec managed to get it on, he made sure he got it off his body. What according to the docter, was almost impossible.

So, when I notice that he goes outside because irritated by a bird ruining his concert, I will go outside too, and warn the bird.

The duck incident was very unexpected for me.

duck is at least twice his size. Did not expect him to be able to kill it.

lol My cat was a music lover, too. He didn't care too much for Hip-Hop, though. I remember one time I was playing Jay-Z and my cat started yowling and yowling. I stopped the song and put on a Nancy Wilson CD. He went and relaxed on the sofa when he heard Nancy. biggrin

Yes! So happy your cat is very picky about his music too!

So often people don't belief me.

My cat starts yowling at cheesy R&B music.

He likes Prince.

Always when Prince was played at the radio, I would call the cat and tell him to listen, because Prince was on the radio. (my cat actually will come over when I call him).

Few days ago, I was under the shower, and my cat miauwet and ran a round in the bathroom. And run out.

Which is very strange, because he hates the shower.

I checked what made him act crazy like that,

and then I heard Purple Rain on the radio and my cat sitting in front of the speaker falloff falloff falloff

My cat shares my humour. lol

Or maybe he took the whole -Prince-is-on-the-radio-thing- very serious, and felled impelled to let me know Prince was played on the radio.

BTW, Prince at Paradiso was al bit too loud for his taste. That's just because he wasn't there.

er

My house is in a quiet neighborhood and has a garden, so plenty of space for cats to wander around. Here's what my cats dragged in thru the years:
Spiders, worms, mice and once a pigeon that they didn't eat, but left a perfectly round blood stain on the floor. (I got it out.) And it's not unusual for me to find a room full of feathers and a half eaten bird. Once I found a bird that was still alive but could no longer fly. I let it out, but it probably had a sad ending.
