My cable modem is a bitch lol

I don't know if it's due to having it at a lengthy time or what but my cable modem loves to trip every now and then. I don't think I'm the only one this has happened to either. lol

Have you ever like been online and suddenly, you just can't get online. You see the lights. The power's on, the DSL and online links are on and the phone lines are on. Then you check your phones (since the modem has to connect to the cable TV, phone and computer) and it don't work but the cable is on.

Now I've solve this remedy on getting the modem back to working by unplugging it and keeping it unplugged for a few minutes and then it would come back on. Sometimes they would be doing something and you have to wait FOR THEM to reset everything to get it to work.

I got Time Warner but I wonder does the same thing happen to those who have Comcast and any other ISP. pc

I have had ATT UVerse and Charter when I lived in a more country-ish area, and my internet went out ALL OF THE TIME! I would call, and they would say everything seems fine on their end, unplug everything, blah, blah, blah. They replaced my cable lines in the house and the main ones outside. It just never worked right. Sometimes, it would go out several times in a day!

We have since moved back to the city, and have Charter again. I have not had one single problem.

I have Verizon, and it's happened to me a few times. All I do, is dissconnect then reconnect everything and start over. I am really thinking about going over to cable. I don't know yet, though.

I have a Router and it acts like an asshole sometimes, like one hellish/insufferable week every 7-8 months (I guess I can't complain)

basically the PPP connection CAN'T STOP going down during that week...until I call maintenance

I was thinking of going to our local internet provider in my city called Greenlight but I don't know how much it cost and I think it's more than Time Warner at the moment.

Wow... a week. lol

I guess I'm lucky that my service has never done that. Even when I had a dial-up router, my online connection was solid. It did have some problems though. At one time, the internet was gone for what seemed like an eternity so I had to use my restore CDs and I got my connection back. lol Luckily I didn't know have anything that was actually of value to keep then so it was no sweat restoring my laptop. Ah memories lol

I live in a country-ish area too and I wonder too sometimes does it have to do with the location? I keep thinking "no" but you never know. hmmm

Might be. My power surge protector I've had since... GOD KNOWS when. I'm surprised it's held up this long but I'm actually thankful for that.

That's the truth, I had to find some wood after my first post. Of course the OS from hell, VIsta has added to my grey hair. lol

Seriously, the cable modem, where is it located in your house? My aunt just had cable modem installed, her cable signal drops or is weak in some parts of her home. Then I realized, her modem is in the back of the(family room) and there's brick in her kitchen so, it's missing with signal strength. Its probably needs to be moved to the certain of the house, at this point we've just elevated and its helped a lot.

My conection would come and go (drop out) Slow connection etc

All the lights on my modem were showing i was connected, so i thought it was the wires outside due to the weather

I went a week with a very bad connection, I called Comcast letting them know of the problem

Long story short.. the problem was the modem was going out, only a year old

They replaced it free, problem solved biggrin

Well from what I'm hearing, they're gonna stop from giving people new modems and shit because of folks prank calling, costing them money, they say... neutral It's in the city I reckon.

Mine's broadband. And on some days yeah they do take that shit down for maintenance especially if there's some sort of outage somewhere that fucks up everyone's feed on the TV cable.

Call your Internet provider and make sure you have the latest model modem. They often come out with new models every couple of years or so, but they don't bother telling the customers. Chances are; if you've had that same modem for more than 2 or 3 years, there's probably a newer, more efficient, modem available, and as a good-paying customer, your provider should be happy to provide you with the latest model for free. A new modem may solve some of your headaches.

Also make sure you're using the sturdiest gauge of cable you can get your hands on, it makes a difference (...you can ask the technician about that when they bring your new modem, or technical support).

Just spoke with mt brother, he always has computer drama too. biggrin

Does your modem comes with a power pack, sometimes those thing go bust before the modem does. My brothers thought his was going bust, when he check Best Buy web site and a guy mentioned, check the power pack. Heat can shorten a life of a modem too. You should be able to get for 90 bucks or a little bit less.

Well, that's the thing: it shouldn't cost you anything. Your Internet/cable provider should exchange your old modem for a new one. I had mine switched out about a year and a half ago, it's what they do. See, because you don't own the modem, it's part of your service (...that you pay a monthly fee for). If you were to have your service disconnected, the first thing they'd do is take the modem back. The modem is technically a part of their equipment, that brings the service (that you're paying for) into your home.

They may try to charge you for a service visit (...if they're really shady), but you avoid that by going to them to pick it up yourself (if you need to). There has got to be a local office not too far from your residence. But getting your modem swapped out for the latest model shouldn't cost you a penny (...not if the one you've had has become defective by no fault of your own, as modems often do...and they know this).

Just let the company know that your modem is no longer working, they'll look at how long you've had it, what model it is (the model number should be on a little white tag on the back or bottom of your modem), and should offer to swap you out with the latest model. If they don't offer to do this, or if they refuse to do it upon request, then there is something very, very wrong with your provider's business model.
