I bought 2 laptops in 10 years or something....they work just fine for a long time. There is not much improvement, so why buy a new one? I doubt Win 8 is to blame, when you need a pc, you buy a pc, but when you have one, they last long.

When I bought my Windows 7 computer, I was offered an upgrade to Windows 8 for $18.00. The sales people really tried to push it on me... I told them I wasn't interested.

For the record, Windows 7 is good. My mom had to buy a new computer and it was installed with Windows 8 but they put it back to 7 for her. She was actually used to VISTA!

On my Mac, I can boot into Windows and I still use XP because that's what I was running the last time I had a PC.

I vaguely remember what you wrote when we discuss this subject months back. Please, share your thoughts again Cerebus.

The PC isn't going anywhere soon but tablet's have cut into a significant chunk of the PC market because a lot of people didn't all the bells and whistle on a PC in the first place - a lot of folks don't use most of the functions on VHS/DVD/Tivo. In some respects, some businesses travelers have ditched their notebooks because what they need can be accessed via the Cloud.

Of course if you are like me and are generally paranoid on who has my info and who's keeping it, and how may have access to it. You can build your "Cloud" too... I'll have a tutorial about how Timmy probably this fall/early next year.

I have Windows 8.

It does have good things. It's FAR faster than 7 for a start. Boot and shutdown is 10x faster than the exact same machine running 7, and the new Task Manager and File Transfer functionality are vastly improved.

That all said, the new interface is a joke and there are still many bugs in the system. Good thing you can turn it off and revert to essentially the same look as 7.

Microsoft have a pattern though:

Windows 3.1 : Good

Windows 95 : Shit

Windows 98 : Good

Windows 2000 : Shit

Windows XP : Good

Windows Vista : Shit

Windows 7 : Good

Windows 8 : Shit

So with any luck Windows 9 will be a VAST improvement.

lol thing is the computer my brother gave me is so fast compared to other computers I had and he's got a lot of good stuff stored there that I haven't deleted (like music and DVD stuff). If it was just a computer we got from Rent a Center, it would be a different story and I'd be like "shoot, sure, why not?" That's really the hold up.

I heard 8 was actually slower than 7... but I guess it depends on the type of computer you got and how much RAM's in there.

Apple updates its OS just as often as Windows (maybe more often). I don't really have a problem with it. I used XP for almost ten years, and I was really happy with it. Windows 7 has worked well for me too.

My only problem is that desktops and laptops are not nearly as sexy as an iPhone (or droid or whatever you choose). That OS is beautiful and totally geared towards utility. I use an iMac at work, and there was not even a fucking timer on it! How can they ignore such obvious things that people use on a regular basis?! A computer should do MORE than an iPhone and there should be MORE apps for a computer than a phone.

I bought my HP laptop in 2011, and it seems totally antiquated compared to my phone, even though I know it's capable of more and it's faster and more powerful.

Microsoft got me once with Windows Vista, i'm not falling for the okey doke a second time.

Its a damn shame that after all these years and just until recent(w7) Windows XP was still Microsoft's best OS(opinion)...
