What hoops could you leap through for reduced insurance?

A Klondike bar is not the only factor that will get people to leap through hoops. A new survey says most motorists would swap their privacy for discounted car insurance rates.

Privacy not a huge concern for most

With all the high fuel prices in the current society, a lot of people want to find ways to get more cash. This means people are willing to give up privacy for a bit more cash.

The survey, commissioned by CarInsurance.com, asked 500 licensed U.S. drivers what privacy-compromising hoops they would jump through for their insurance businesses, assuming it meant reduced insurance rates. None of them was endorsed by less than 20 percent of those surveyed.

What could you do to pay reduced premiums?

These are the questions on the survey:

Would you let an insurance company install a camera in your car to watch your every move? - 20 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company tell you what hours you can drive?

- 24 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company tell you how far from home you could drive?

- 27 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company tell you how fast you could drive?

- 28 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company disable your cell phone whenever you got behind the wheel?

- 37 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company install a data-monitoring device in your car?

- 39 percent would.

Would you let an insurance company install a breathalyzer in your car to monitor your alcohol intake?

- 64 percent would

Not too far out

It should be expected that these things will occur soon, though most are not currently offered by insurance companies. There are pay as you go programs accessible that monitor driver behavior and adjust insurance rates depending on that. In fact, most insurance corporations do offer that program right now.

Des Toups, managing editor of CarInsurance.com, said, “Insurance companies are already dabbling with these technologies. But clearly they could push the envelope even further than they are now.”

Toups went on to say that the very best way to ensure low rates is to drive safely, don't get tickets and certainly don't drive drunk. Good advice on so many amounts.

Looking at the price

Sadly, most customers are willing to give up their privacy to save some money. I'd not be willing to do that, but I guess that is the society we live in.
