I ruptured both eardrums when I was 13. From what I can remember I was in pain for a few days. As far as I can tell I have not had much hearing loss....BUT I absolutely can not take even the slightest cold on my ears without getting severe pain. It is even worse when it is windy and my ears are bare.

The worst.

It healed and you can still hear, good. Mine right ear ruptured from an ear infection Sunday. Its still leaking clear fluid. :gross: I never get ear infections.

Most of the time they will heal on their own. The doctor should have told you that...

Yeah, other than Tylenol 3, I don't remember getting any medication. It happened when I was on a boating holiday and had them burst due to deep water pressure change. I can remember my parents trying desperately to find a doctor at the nearest town and I also remember the rest of my holiday royally sucking. sad

You´ll probably need surgery where they put something into your ear, underneath your ear drum, and then they cover the area by glueing something on top of it, and that´s where the new tissue grows. If you´re lucky and not too old, your ear drum will heal and create new tissue.

Be careful with deep diving in the future, and also be careful not to headdive or jump into water with your head first.

You should definitely see a doctor as soon as possible. I´ve been having terrible ear issues lately and I´m glad I went to see a specialist.

Your hearing might be impaired in the future but if you´re lucky it will be just the same as it was before. And never use Q-Tips....they do more harm than good.

So what do you use to clean your ears with?

Soft tissues, Kleenex, or I just wash them while showering (albeit experts say that that isn´t really good either). I just got back from my otolaryngologist and he checked my ears (they are clean wink ) and reminded me again that Q-Tips are indeed bad for your ears.

Even the manufacturer´s website does not recommend using them inside your ear. I use them for a variety of other purposes but never inside my ears.

I had to go to the doctor a few years back because I woke up and couldn't hear a THING out of my right ear.

The doctor washed out a plug that had been created from cleaning my ears with Q-tips...which pushes some of the wax inward and clumps it into a plug.

Lately I've been waking up with reduced hearing in my right ear that goes away after I shower...I think I need to buy one of those medicine kits to clean out the ear.

hmm

First, I do not understand this growing drama about Q-tips. If you're sticking them so far in your ear that it hurts, or you're damaging your hearing parts, you're doing it wrong. Seriously. They are for cleaning the outer portion of your ear, even the outer portion of the inner ear, around the edges, maybe to the depth of the q-tip head. They aren't for cleaning your brain. lol

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have TERRIBLE tinnitus from the many years of going to hundreds of concerts and raves, where I was often standing right in front of large stacks of speakers (and possibly putting my head inside them, but that I won't admit whistling ), without using hearing protection. I have ringing in my right ear that never goes away 100%, but it is so faint that I can't hear it unless I'm in complete quiet. Like, when I try to sleep, which is sometimes a problem. But do to other issues (with my eyes) I have to have a dim light source on to sleep, too, so I usually just leave the tv on with low volume until I fall asleep (I always turn it off at some point, subconciously, I guess). If I do ANYTHING loud without wearing ear plugs the rining increases dramatically, sometime starts in the left ear as well, and if it's a sudden loud noise I do sometimes get a sharp pain in my ear. I have been told by two doctors that the scaring on both ears is visible (although I only have ringing in one) and that there is absolutely nothing they can do about it. Unfortunately, tinnitus can be a side effect of ear infections, but its not a guarantee or anything.

This website might help you to at least mask the tinnitus with other noise of your choice. My favorite sounds are the ocean waves and crickets.
