I say having a physical library is important.

If you ditch the CDs, I'd recommend a backup hard drive for your music, in case your iPod, iPad and PC all crash.

CD's for the older stuff (and Prince). Digital is ok for the crap music of today.

By the way, there is this wonderful French music store that offers CD-quality and 24-bit files. [img:$uid]http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/cd08785a.gif[/img:$uid]

I'm annoyed with iTunes right now because I bought something on my phone, and now it's not showing up on my computer. Only on the phone.

Did you update to 6.1 or whatever it was?

I just discovered that it will add stuff from the phone to the computer when you sync. So problem solved!

I think for music, it will automatically download other copies to your computer(s), but since books come from Audible, you only get one download.

ANY form of physical media for me.

I do however save them into my iPod library so I can listen to it in my car.

My library currently sits at 8157 Songs (49.69GB), and Im only half done, I reckon.

I have yet to purchase a song from iTunes, and refuse to do so.

If I want a song, I'll go out and buy it, even if its part of a compilation and the rest of it is shit.

And if i hit rock bottom, and cant find it anywhere.......... I'll locate it somewhere online. Shhh!

I keep my CDs because I like grabbing one and carrying it to my Jeep to play in my CD deck. I suppose I wouldn't have to if they were all ripped, but chyld there is not a hard drive or iPod large enough for that duty!

What are better orgers to have a great physical CD collection or ipod/ipad library? Please defend your answer. Considering going to the dark side of ditching physical CDs (minus like 2-3 artists) what are everybody's thoughts?

iTunes. Takes up less space than CDs and you can create huge playlists and/or call up thousands of tracks instantly.

Sold/gave out my entire physical collection after I transferred it into my Ipod. When it comes to music as far as I'm concerned, convenience should be above anything, especially if you travel alot like I do.

If you're going to listen to digital music at least do it properly. The Linn Klimax Dsm. £15,500. That about $20,000 right? Don't forget you'll need a preamp, cables and speakers. Studio quality tracks are about £14 each.
A bargain I'd say wink

I love the convenience and portability of having all my music on my iPod/mp3 player, as I can pull any song I feel like listening to at the drop of a button. Having said that, absolutely nothing beats the smooth warm sound of vinyl.

First of all, call it semantics if you want, but the question should be CD or digital music library. Because some of use don't use iPods, iPads or iTunes, and we never will.

Second to that, for me anyway, is that fact that I still buy vinyl. It continues to be a growing market, which makes it very easy to buy new music on that format.

However, ignoring my second point (because I'm never getting rid of my vinyl), I would say I'd rather have a digital music library than my CD collection. I love being able to throw together a pile of files, be it small or large, on a whim. It's great to be able to just move from one song to another at the click of a mouse without having to physically touch and move CDs. For me, do to the fact that I have far too much music, there is also a huge convenience factor to just being able to search for something by name if I can't find it where I thought it was.

That being said, I don't WANT to get rid of my CDs, either. Not yet anyway. There are some artists that I still enjoy collecting in that format. And it is nice to sometimes have some artwork and liner notes to look at and read while listening.

Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I digitized my entire CD collection a few years back, and the biggest sacrifice as far as I can tell has been printed art and liner notes, both of which are accessible for many relaeases themselves in digital form. On the other hand, I've gained quite a bit: Saved space in my home, portability of my entire collection, greater flexibility to copy or manipulate my recordings. Seems a no brainer to me. shrug

I will buy the hard copy of a title now only if it is not available in a digital format. I will, however, ultimately digitize it and sell off or give away the actual physical item.
