Jim Nabors marries longtime companion

"I'm very happy," says the actor who's known for playing Gomer Pyle in the 1960s.

Congrats are in order for Jim Nabors. And from the sound of it, they're long overdue.

The actor, known for playing Gomer Pyle in the 1960s on The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., has married his male partner of 38 years.

Nabors, 82, tells Hawaii News Now that he tied the knot with Stan Cadwallader, 64, in Seattle on Jan. 15. Gay marriage became legal in Washington state last month and the two traveled from Hawaii for the ceremony that was performed in a hotel room by a judge.

"I'm not ashamed of people knowing, it's just that it was such a personal thing, I didn't tell anybody," Nabors said, acknowledging that he has never spoken publicly about his personal relationship before. "I'm very happy that I've had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed. And, what can I tell you, I'm just very happy."

When he worked full-time in Hollywood in the 1960s and 1970s, Nabors said he was open about being gay to co-workers and friends but never publicly spoke about it to the media until now.

"I haven't ever made a public spectacle of it. Well, I've known since I was a child, so, come on. It's not that kind of a thing," Nabors tells Hawaii News Now. "I've never made a huge secret of it at all."

I didn't realize that Mr. Nabors is still alive.

I'm not sure what's cold about it, not meant to be funny. It's just that most of the cast had already passed, and Mr. Griffith died recently.

I didn't mean to imply that you were uncaring... It just reminded me of Abe Vigoda in a humerous way... Sorry if I offended you; I didn't mean to... I am very glad that Jim Neighbors finally came out and married his long term companion. I grew up watching him--and I would hope that my departed grandparents who loved his performances would accept him now, if they were alive... After all, he is still the same person...

Actually, I do recall hearing that he was a recording artist. But, he will always be best known for Gomer Pyle.

Growing up, I used to see him on Andy Griffith and Gomer Pyle whenever they would bring back old television shows in random networks (not just Nick at Nite). I wasn't heavy on Nabors being in music though.

By the 1990's, I think the "easy listening" radio format had been pretty much phased out, which is where his records were played. That's also around the time, stores/restaurants/malls started to stop playing "muzak" and changed to popular songs by the original performers. The local easy listening station that had been there for years changed to a station that played random songs. Like one minute you'd hear 1950's Elvis, then a disco song, then country, then The Beatles, Thompson Twins, etc. It didn't last that long. It's changed formats several times since then. Today it's a Spanish station that mostly plays tejano.

God yes! Every afternoon after school when the TV stations used to show reruns of old TV shows like "What's Happening", etc., every commercial break was an adverstisement to one of his albums through an 800 phone number. During a lot of the after midnight reruns too. This was years before the infomercial age.

I remember in the late 1970s, he also had another sitcom where he was in some part of the military, maybe the navy this time. That's been a lot of years but I think I remember seeing sailor suits in the show. He was way ahead of his time with the "don't ask, don't tell" military shows.

And in the 1980s, every time your turned around, he and Miss Dom Deloise was starring in some movie with fine ass Burt Reynolds. Them two whores need to be locked in a rubber room somewhere if they didn't try to get some of that sexy dick right there.
