I get in my PJs a couple hours before bed and usually watch some tv in the living room - either recorded on the dvr or from netlfix. I have a scoop or two of ice cream almost every night.

Then I brush my teeth and I SHOULD wash my face and moisturize, but I am often too lazy. I need to change that part. Then I get in bed and read or play a word game on my kindle for about 20 minutes until my lids get heavy. Then it's lights off and away to dreamland.

I have a kinda/sorta routine. I wash my face and brush my teeth, take my supplements, and develop a sketchy plan about what I want to wear the next day (so I at least know whether I need to shave my legs in the morning lol ).

I used to crawl into bed and watch TV, but I've stopped that. (I also turn off the computer and iPad an hour before I go to bed.) It made it harder to fall asleep, but then there were also times that I'd fall asleep with the TV on, then wake up later and have trouble getting back to sleep. Now, I read a chapter or two on my non-backlit Nook. It helps me to relax and cues my brain that it's time to go to sleep.

I used to do that too - the tv thing. For years I only had 1 tv so never had one in my bedroom. A few years ago when I bought my fancy new one I put the old one in the bedroom and I stopped reading and fell asleep w.the tv on every night and would have to wake up later to turn it off.

Now that I moved in w/my bf I don't have a tv in the bedroom anymore. I got rid of the old one and his tv went in the guest bedroom. I'm much happier and I've finally started reading again.

Wow! Last night I left the devices "downstairs" (I have a loft) and set the alarm on my iPad. TOTALLY WORKED in forcing me to get out of bed in the morning to shut the alarm off. Sometimes habit really does obscure simple solution. !!!

My 'before-bed' routine is to pee, pee and pee some more. Seems that no matter how much I do there's a couple more trips in my future. I'm certain there's something very wrong with me.

1) Wash the dishes

2) Have a small, light snack

3) Wash up

4) Brush and rinse

5) Set the alarm

6) Watch the Wayans Bros

7) Asleep by 10:35pm

this is similar to how things wind down in my house, too- just some things are switched around a little

1) wash the last dishes of the day

2) wash up

3) brush & rinse

4) check the last emails (cause somebody always get one at 10pm regardig something that needs to be done)

5) set the alarm

6) get in bed with a stash red wine, beer, and Haribo gummy bears for snacking

7) watch magnum p.i., silk stalkings, moonlighting, or hart to hart

8) fall asleep immediately after the crime is solved...unless we find something else to do wink

Last night I saw Liz Lemon getting very excited about organising her calendar with COLOUR CODING geek

I love the idea of organisationing but ultimately that feels like too much work dead

You know, planning the way I do is a TON of work. Sometimes it takes me an hour just to plan the next day! But I'm pretty sure it's worth it, because I am efficient once it's all laid out, and I get to things I would neglect otherwise, and I save time by consolidating trips and coordinating my activities and doing this according to priority.

I've been reading a book about time management and one of the key principles is being REALISTIC about time. Hashing out the details beforehand helps me do this.

So when you're planning, are you sitting at the desk filling up the hours of your calendar, or just planning in your mind?

Also, what's the book? I read First Things First by Stephen Covey, and it was (in the beginning at least) a very interesing book, but it didn't get me to change my habits very much. I tried for a while, but it did not last, partly because I stopped using my Franklin Planner. But google calendar could function pretty much the same as the Covey one.

I sit at a table with my iPad calendar and schedule every hour of the day, maybe while eating a snack.

Time Management From The Inside Out by Julia Morgenstern

I read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I think I learned a lot, but his system of prioritizing doesn't work for me. I do better with giving tasks blocks of time, rather than assigning every task a number and doing it that way. His system makes me feel trapped.

I just want to emphasize that scheduling my day ahead of time is so beneficial, especially when I'm really busy. During the day, I get spacey, fatigued etc and I often just look at my calendar and follow it without thinking. It doesn't work so well for me to make decisions on the go, when my brain can't focus that well. I also can't remember what's going on half the time, so the calendar is really a sturdy guide.

Maybe you're old? Some guys need to whizz more as they get older.

That happened to me, but only for a little while. After a month or two of what you described, things went back to normal. I have no idea why but I am so thankful for it!

Mine:

1. Make sure doors are locked, lights are out, and dog has done her business

2. Plan next day and write out goals in calendar

3. Shower, brush teeth, etc.

4. Watch something funny on TV
