Question about music videos and how they were shot pre-HD.

I know this may be a crazy question, but I was wondering if music videos and films were shot using the same process pre-HD?

I would love to see videos from MJ, Prince, Madonna and others mastered in HD if that is possible. I figure if they can master a movie in HD, why not an old music video?

they can

a lot of music videos were shot in film rather than video

film is analogue so has a "resolution" far higher than any existing digital format, whilst video shot in SD is much lower in quality

but it depends on money to transfer material and it's usually not commercially viable for old music videos

Thanx, Unique for answering the question for me.

I agree that it wouldn't make sense to invest in making a lot of the HD quality. I just think that it would be a smart move for the MJ estate to invest the money and remaster all of his videos from Thriller through HIStory. A nice Blu-ray release would be nice.

whilst some may have been shot on film, it depends on what they were edited on, especially with the visual effects of later videos. bad and thriller may have been edited on film, but later videos may have been shot on film and edited on video

i think some of the star wars episodes had similar issues and in the end they recreated the effects. for a limited market i can't see it being worthwhile for music videos like that

That makes sense. Thanks for the info.
