Such sad news plus the fact that he didn't get royalties from his shows makes the news more depressing. GOD bless his soul and family and friends still here.

Why on earth did he sell his royalties? That show doesn't stop playing in TV, if at all. I'm curious as to what made him come to that decision.

He needed the money. I guess most don't know that royalties don't always come in a timely way it could be months, sometimes years before u receive anything. The longer the show been off the air. The lessor the checks. Sherman was strapped for money & sold his rights away. sad

I'm a little sad that this is the first time I'm seeing this. The brother had some moves, that's for sure. I just hate that so often someone has to pass away before I am able to appreciate all that they had done in their lifetime. I always really liked Sherman Hemsley, not just "George Jefferson", and hope that he is resting peacefully.

SHERMAN HEMSLEY
NO AUTOPSY
Died of Natural Causes

BREAKING NEWS
0724_sherman2_landscape
Sherman Hemsley will not undergo an autopsy ... and the medical examiner has confirmed that he died of natural causes.

El Paso police say they do not suspect foul play in the actor's death. The ME's office did say Hemsley had been ill, but did not elaborate.

As TMZ first reported ... Hemsley died yesterday in his El Paso home. He was most famous for playing TV's George Jefferson -- first on "All in the Family", and then on the spinoff "The Jeffersons."

He was 74.

It was nice to see all the national news shows and newspapers talk about Sherman's groundbreaking role and place in American pop culture history. Yesterday, Good Morning America opened its show with "The Jeffersons" theme song and CBS put up a in memoriam graphic of Sherman during its night time programming.

I hope that before his death, Sherman Herman realized he was so beloved and appreciated. RIP...

I used to live on the same block as Helen Martin (Pearl) in the 80's, and had the honor of giving her a ride home on several occasions. Johnny Brown (Bookman from "Good Times"), used to live on the same street, and would always speak as he'd go jogging (...yes, jogging, lol), by my apartment several times a month. I miss those days, it was a very interesting little community.

Do you know that you've been associated with broadway royalty?

Maybe not in mainstreamt terms, I've read about that woman's life, she had her hands in most of the entertainment outlets since her break out years, and made her presence known in damn in near EVERY TV/Film appearance she showed up in.

Pure and complete comic timing, perhaps even one of the best. I bet she was a cool person to hang out with.

I can't really say that I've had the opportunity to "hang" with her, but I have spoken with her on several occasions during times when I had dropped her off at her house, which was several doors up the block from mine, and waited until she made it safely inside. And while I'm not that familiar with her Broadway career (...nor surprised to be learning of it), I am aware that she starred in a whole bunch of movies, like "Cotton Comes To Harlem", "A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich", and many others. She was a very cool, down-to-earth, lady, that I wish I could have known better.

Nevertheless, to bring it back around to Sherman Hemsley; I wondered if he and Helen Martin had ever done anything together, and found this episode of "227" which originally aired on 2/13/88. The sound and picture are crumby, but at least it documents that these two had worked together (...probably on more than a few occasions over the years). May they both be resting peacefully.
