Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the character George Jefferson famous in "The Jeffersons," has died, El Paso cops tell TMZ.

Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas.

Hemsley, who was 74, became famous during his appearances on "All in the Family." The spin-off, "The Jeffersons" was a monster hit. He also starred in the TV show, "Amen." He was also a professional singer and even released the single in 1989, "Ain't that A Kick in the Head."

Hemsley had no wife and no kids.

It's unclear how he died.

Classic TV actor. I feel like he could have done movies and maybe been more like a Danny DeVito, but at least we have the Jeffersons and...ahem...Amen

Just a few hours ago I was watching an episode of AMEN, in which Hemsley's character was wooing Nell Carter (whom I also loved) sad was just thinking how rich the the televison landscape was back then thanks to so many genuinely talented actors . Rest in peace, Mr. Hemsley. sad rose

Mike Evans...the thick Lionel as I called him, passed in 2006.

I agree.. I was talking to a 19yr old about him, he was like who is that? This generarion has NO idea what great T.V is

That scene where they got into a wrestling match! lol Sherman brought so much fun to his roles.

I hope that Philly pays some kind of tribute to our home-boy. We used to call my uncle and joke with him that Sherman stole his character...that's how much he acted, walked and talked exactly like my uncle.

I was just wondering what happened to Sherman a few days ago. I saw him in some play about 6 or 8 years ago with Guinwine. Can't remember the name of it. Haven't seen or heard from him since.

1st it was Helen, then Weezy and now George? sad What a loss!

He and Weezy were part of my life, The Jeffersons marathon were a great boost back in my deep depression spills when I didn't have the strength to get outta bed. I'll miss them.
