Specifically: What's the name of the metal pole attached to the bottom of the sail? The one that can bash you in the head (if you don't duck) when the boat's "coming about"?

I haven't been in a sailboat in, like, 30 years, so maybe coming about isn't the manoeuvre I mean. All I remember is, at some point, they warn you to be careful, 'cause that big fucking rod suddenly swings around like Babe Ruth taking a cut.

Dutch word for it is giek. Translation serves me these terms:

hoist (ww.), crane (the ~), jib (the ~)

I sailed as a kid. I would love to sail again. Need some lessons though. However, that feeling never fades, does it?
