the food in the cafeteria isnt so bad... the food they serve while your IN the hospital is crap!

Fortunately, I've never been in the hospital myself but I've seen some of the plates that were brought for relatives while I was visiting them. String beans all round and plump with a light green color. You can just look at them at tell that those beans came straight from the can and had never been anywhere near any bacon grease. lol

I was at UCI for a surgery....afterwards was fuckin awesome....u called the kitchen when u wanted to eat...read off of a varied menu.....quesadillas, burgers, pizza, soup, sandwiches...French toast, pancakes, omelettes....it was all pretty good. Not no cheesecake factory, but much better than ALL the other hospital food i've ever had.....and I've had my share....

I hate EVERYTHING about hospitals

I'd rather be in jail for some months (minor offence), that at least would mean that I'm healthy and well...

After like 8 I felt the same way about hospitals...not because of something that happened to ME but just seeing someone clinging to life like I did my paternal grandmother. That was enough for me to get turned off by hospitals for life. sad

It really is. I rather remember how someone was when they were alive and kicking... that's just too much. disbelief Also a reason I don't attend funerals.

I wanna speak up here for 3 reasons:

1) I've been admitted to the hospital 40 times in the last 6 years (digestive disorder now cured).

2) I have developed IMMENSE respect for all hospital staff, esp. the nursing crews who toil unholy hours in a VERY trying environment (and often out of altruistic motives).

3) After eating nothing but "clears" (It's what many patients get while they are in the hospital. It's just all your system can take when you are THAT ill, many times).....my nurses, God bless 'em, felt sorry for me after I bitched about the constant Jello & broth & the dreaded "cream soup" (it was like wallpaper paste).

Just before I was released for the last time, they made sure I got a "proper meal"...direct from the hospital kitchen. Now, given, I was STARVING after all those "clears"....but I'll just be damned....it was amazing. A full balanced meal with veggies & roast beef (all perfectly done)....got me some butter for my taters & even SALT....lol...... awwwwwwwwwww...was just amazing coming out of a hospital kitchen of a a major regional HMO.

SO.....

They CAN crank out some good eats. The problem is that we are often too sick to receive 'em while in there. wink

It's been so long since I was a patient I can't say, but I remember the last time I was one it was a Seventh Day Adventist hospital and they served some chicken legs were pretty good. When I worked at LBM the cafeteria food was great, the pancakes were especially awesome.

Sometimes it's not bad. The pasta dishes are usually a good bet, and you can often get a veggie burger. The vegetables are almost always gross. I have a thing for the little plastic cartons of cranberry juice. I don't drink it at home, but for some reason whenever I'm in the hospital I can't get enough of those little cranberry juices. And they'll usually bring you pudding or sherbet whenever you want. woot!

My husband and my mother in law usually smuggle me in some chocolate and other treats.

I was in the hospital after having abdominal surgery 11 years ago. The food at the hospital that I stayed at was not great, but not bad either. It was somewhere in the middle.

The part that was the worst for me about staying in the hospital was the woman who I shared a room with. She was whining and making so much damn noise, it was driving me nuts! I requested another room, and wound up getting a room all to myself, and it was so much nicer. No more noisy roommate. What's strange is, the woman was released from the hospital the following morning. With the way she was moaning and groaning the night before, I thought they would keep her in the hospital for at least another day, but they didn't. They probably couldn't stand being around her either, and wanted to get rid of her. lol

RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Yeah. was very.

True story.....

In all the nurses I had while in there, my fave..her first name was "Honey".

I thought it funny (Mr Commedian here)....I'd say "I CAN call her 'hon', and it's NOT sexist because it's her REAL name"..lol

On July 23, 2008 my blood preesure soared uncontrolably Honey, being the "first in charge" that shift, got me to ICU on time.

On a later visit, I got the rare grace to actually "introduce" her to my Father & admit that she had (perhaps by herself) saved my life that day. His response was to hug her.

She was also directly responsible for me receiving my one decent meal during 2.5 milion dollars' worth of treatment. (my only decent bed as well.......scoured the entire hospital for one of the "older models" that wasn't designed for geriatrics).

Sincere props to ALL nurses...esp ones named Honey wink.

Depends on the hospital. Luckily I've never been at a hospital as an inpatient so I can't speak as to whether patient food is different than visitor food.

When I was younger my father & grandfather were both in the hospital several times. I hated the hospital cafeteria and the food. It was in the basement so it was dark and gloomy and the food was so bland. That was in the 80s though so maybe they've stepped up their game since then. lol

Northwestern University Hospital was just a few blocks away from where I worked in Chicago and they had a really nice cafeteria. It had different stations that specialized in different foods (e.g. Mexican, Italian, burgers, salad bar, etc.) The food wasn't gourmet but for lunch it was good and inexpensive. It was on the mezzanine level and they had a huge seating area with a lot of windows so it was nice and sunny.

The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

University Hospital in Madison has a pretty awesome cafeteria, too. I ate there when Sweetie had surgery a couple years ago - though I wasn't exactly hungry with all he was going through.
