How do you find new job areas to work in? I need advice. A backup plan.
Better yet, how do I start a business and market myself? I know nothing about it [Edited 6/5/12 0:55am]

Do you have a degree? If so in what?
What field do you want to work in exactly?
Where have you worked before? Can they give your references?
When was the last time you updated your Curriculum Vitae or Resume?
Have you done naything recently that would make you a suitable candidate for a job?
Ask the community you're in, tell'em you're looking for a job and establish a good reputation. Word of mouth is still a force to be reckoned with. The salvation of man is through love and in love. - Dr. V. Frankl

I don't want to ask for references from them right now, and I've been doing the same kind of job for 4 years with some volunteering on the side, seems like I'm in a rut
Word of mouth is definitely a great suggestion, but I'm not sure what I'm looking for either though I have a few ideas.
Plus I want to do something independtly and on the creative side, but I'm worried it won't work out

All good advice.
Every one of my careers (save the first one) was something I fell backassward into. Somebody knew me...or remembered me...or liked me...and recommended me to someone else. I've actually been hired for jobs without an interview - just on the basis of a recommendation.
You don't necessarily need to know exactly what you want to do (I never did), but the advice above about establishing a good reputation and word of mouth is golden. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

What if people complain about you and belittle you, but then claim they recommended you to someone? Someone claimed they did that for me, but I just said ok, and believe that my own hard work and my management appreciating my efforts for the past few years is what got me recognition too.
I never know what I want to do, even when I jumped into uni, I changed my program of choice last minute without knowing what I was getting myself into and here I am 10 years later still not knowing what to do yet utilizing the degree. I wish to utilize it in other ways, especially if I do a post-grad , or do another program altogether though other ones scare me too and will all be costly and maybe not worth it if I can't find work for those.
