its winter here and yes i got cold..... It's a hot cereal....like a cross between oatmeal and malt-o-meal. It made out of ground corn, but not as fine as cornmeam. Simmer it for 20(5 for the instant variety which is taking over the market) mins to let it soak up some water, butter, salt, eat...or put whatever u want on it. U ever seen "my cousin vinny"? But then why go to an ethnic restaurant if you do not want the attendant cultural experience of eating it the way it's supposed to be eaten? Do you expect ketchup on it too? If you go to an ethiopian restaurant, expect to sit on the floor and use your hands from common dishes; eat the damn tacos with your hands too; at a churrascaria, expect your meat to be portioned to you off a skewer that's going around. Anyway, lots of concessions are made for doing business in "someone else's country" (btw, many of these restauranteurs are AMERICAN CITIZENS - we're all immigrants here at some point in our history, tinaz ). The food tastes differently than in its country of origin, to cater to American tastes. But when you start setting out forks and knives, the restaurant is basically SCREAMING inauthentic, which is negative for business too. Do you want your Mexican food from Annie Smith's Mexican-like Restaurant? Some people do; many prefer Pepe's Taqueria. Many want an authentic ethnic food experience. Otherwise, go to Applebees.

Because most times, I just want to enjoy some damn good food!! I dont know how to use chopsticks... I dont live in an asian country, so why would I?? I totally understand what you are saying though... But "normally" I dont go to these types of restaurants for the "experience", I do go for the "authenticity" but that doesnt mean I shouldnt expect them to have silverware... If I want that I will actually go to the country of the restaurant, and then yes, I would know I had to use their way of eating...
They dont have to set them out on the table, but they should have them because lets face it.. they are in America, and we use silverware... ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

Silverwear is a dime a dozen. I had to sit in a floor and eat one time....it was bullshit. I can't even remember what the food tasted like cuz I couldn't get comfortable. [Edited 5/27/12 7:03am]

Nobody's talking about chopsticks. Talking about eating ribs. You eat American-style ribs with a fork & knife? Anyway, this topic ain't that serious. I'm out.

Yes I do.. Just because something has bones in it doesnt mean its fair game to eat like a caveman! Eating messy food with just your fingers is best reserved for at home, not in public...Do you pick up your T-bone steak and start gnawing on it, no.. you use a knife and a fork...The only thing I MAY pick up and eat is a chicken leg, and thats only if it has no sauce... To each his own, and your right, its not that serious, but you were the one to point out how ridiculous is was for white people to eat this way, sooooooooo ~~~~~ Oh that voice...incredible....there should be a musical instrument called George Michael... ~~~~~

when I lived in Miami beach in the late 80's early 90's we had a ton of Japanese immigrants and sushi restaurants springing up: while a knife and fork would be available if you requested one, they weren't laid out on the table. It's just not the Japanese way of eating. I simply had my dinner companions teach me how to use chopsticks, and one thing I liked is that most restaurants actually provided chopsticks with I guess what you would call "training wheels" on them; they were tied together in such a way to train your hands to pick up your food with great ease, essentially the training chopsticks used for teaching small children how to hold and eat correctly.
I remember taking my visitingsouthern-come- midwestern mother to one of these restaurants some years later, I think she may have been in her early 50's. I was actually pretty proud of her for buckling up and not only trying something exotic, but being brave and open enough to try to eat the food in the way that it was meant to be eaten; she proudly took her training wheeled chopsticks and tore the hell into California rolls like an old pro.
I can understand wanting ethnic restaurants to provide knives and forks for one's own comfort to a degree, but there are some instances where I just feel it's a bastardization of other's food culture: for example, living here in western Europe we too are pretty big on the knife and fork, but in Germany there seems to be more of an acceptance and embracing of different culinary traditions from around the globe. Here it would be pretty disrespectful and close minded to think that we would go into a Ghanian restaurant and not expect to eat Foo Foo with the hands, or anEthiopian restaurant and not eat with hands from a common family style plate, or a Turkish restaurant & not eat those yummy filled Turkish pizzas with the hand. Here I guess it's slightly opposite to the States in that people make strides to step out of the box a little and eat foods from other cultures they way they were originally intended.
I generally try to adapt my way of eating according to the culinary heritage and custom of the restaurant or dish, but I do also understand how that's not of interest to everybody. Hey, when you're hungry, you're hungry and you just want to get it in!
