Love in the Time of Cholera

Sophie's Choice

right behind are:

The Color Purple

The Sun Also Rises

Roots

If u like the color purple check out Possessing the secret of joy & The temple of my familiar as they are kind of a trilogy.

Thanks for the recommendation. I have already read all of Alice Walker's work. I love her early stuff such as you mentioned, but some of her newer work is hard to read. In Search of our Mother's Garden is one of my favs.

I think maybe kids books really are the ones that have meant the most to me over the years.

The Hobbit

The Lion The Witch & the Wardrobe

I'm with you on that one. It's nice to be taken somewhere with happy endings. I thought Harry Potter was something else.

Yes, and also, they are magical and I've known them for most of my life.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

This story of self discovery and growth from immaturity is good. But its someone who, for whatever reason is facing fears and instead of letting them be reinforced, recognizes their faults and sheds them. I very much identify with this and have been through a similar journey.

Needful Things - Stephen King

The cost of self-indulgence is a very appealing topic to me because I have struggles with it myself.

A close third is "Roughing It" - Mark Twain.
The funniest book I have EVER read, by far.

First time reading the latter 12 years ago was a horror, I had to do an essay about it and it was a slow read. I fell in love with it years later though, after discovering Ralph Ellison's earlier short novel Flying Home.

It also didn't hurt that Mr.Ellison had a killer wry sense of humor.

I wanted to name Catcher in the Rye since I couldn't wait to see what happens next when reading, but it seems like the popular choice in this topic. I enjoyed some of the books I read in high school, but want to re-read them to appreciate them. Can't think of a favourite book right now, I get through self-help ones right now.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte mushy I just love this story!

Go Ask Alice - anonymous. Struck me deeply as a 12 year old reader.

many of the books we read in HS english (like Jane Eyre) were awesome, sadly I was the ONLY kid in class who bothered to read them.

Flowers for algernon was a good one too.

I LOVED Anne Rice's vampire chronicles too.

Nemisis by Isaac Asimove sticks with me also

I go through phases where I read a lot then...I don't. I've been in a "don't" phase for a while now. I'd like to get back into a reading phase.
