So when someone is breaking the law, no matter how minor it is, and is shot and killed, everyone should just think it's ok because they were engaging in criminal activity...that is, of course, if you go by the logic stated above.

Both can be deadly, so there should never be any outcry when it happens by taser or by gun.

Cool.

Erin...the use of tasers is unfortunately the norm, not the exception nowadays.

Abuse would be for him to have tackled her to the ground or thrown his baton at the back of her head to stop her.

Cops can't really lay a hand on a suspect nowadays without winding up in litigation, which is why tasers and pepper spray are routinely being employed.

The girl was being arrested, she ran, he stopped her.

If she had fallen on a patch of grass, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Where do you live?

In the U.S. they can still kill without winding up in litigation or going to jail.

no ,some people have a heart condition which means they might die if tasered

so tasing people IS abuse

That makes no sense.

Some people are susceptible to being injured or dying when shot.

How is a cop supposed to know that someone violating the law has a heart condition?

I never said they were not the norm. confuse

You use a taser and the person falls harder than a motherfucker....everyone knows this.

And it's not just because they are risking a devastating fall like this one....I, for one. would very likely go into cardiac arrest if I was tasered due to a heart condition that I have.

They should NEVER have been deemed an acceptable way to apprehend a suspect. It's filed under the guise of an effective and safe way to stop a suspect and it absolutely is not.

And using it willy nilly like he did absolutely is abuse...even if it's ridiculously deemed "acceptable" withing the force.

So they would rather risk killing someone to avoid litigation...yeah, that's a great idea. If he had shot her people would be up in arms....but people ignorantly think tasers are a safe practice.

I guarantee that they will eventually be banned....at least in Canada....first.

I definitely agree that it was him being lazy in this case...if he wasn't busy stuffing his face with donuts and pulled pork, he would've had no problem catching up to this chick and holding her down.

And I agree that tasers are being used wayyyy too much.

But until web-slingers or some other technology is developed (or until lawyers stop winning million-dollar lawsuits for crooks getting tackled) then tasers & pepper spray are here to stay.

If not tasers, then WHAT?

What case or cases are you referring to?

I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

People were complaining about tasers and their danger and wanting them banned.. My point was if people didnt break the law, their would be no use for them.. Dont cry about how you (criminals) are apprehended, cuz if you werent breaking the law, you wouldnt have a complaint!!

My whole point is... Dont break the law! lol I mean, what would you have the police do for people that dont cooperate and are out of control??

Let's hope no one you care about makes a bad decision one day (like a simple petty crime) and ends up being permanently damaged or worse because of an apprehension option that is considered acceptable until something safer comes along.

So if you can outrun a cop, then you should be allowed to break the law?!

What is something safer?

Come to think of it, this never would've happened if we didn't have police to begin with . . . .

If he weren't such a fat bastard he wouldn't even have to think about touching that fucking taser. Whether it was "abuse" or not, police men shouldn't be fat (or at least able to run quicker than a hand-cuffed person), and he should therefor be suspended.

His not being fit enough led to this huge dilemma. It maybe wasn't his direct fault that she fell and hit the ground with the back of her head, but it is his (and the police departement's) direct fault that he is such a fat motherfucker and can't catch a hand-cuffed girl.

Apart from that, because she was handcuffed, I assume it was him who handcuffed her in the first place. A police man should have a close look at the people he hand-cuffs and should not even give them any kind of opportunity to break free and run. That's another reason for why he should be suspended and the police department should spend more time picking the right people for this important job.

YES!!! Finally, someone gets it. I'm sick of everyone trying to coddle criminals...she should not have run..period. Abide by the law and you won't have to worry about dealing with the cops. You commit crimes, you run, you resist arrest or point a gun at a cop, then you get what you get...

But there are alot of cases where ppl got tased and they didn't break the law. There are some cops out there who "abuse" the weapons they're strapped with just cause they have it. These days u don't have to break the law to get taken advantage of by cops.

When it's outlawed and still used, I will be first in line to cry foul.

...and as an 'fyi'...anyone who has a heart condition and runs from a cop threatening to tase them is pretty much committing suicide.

Yes , it should

And that's the main reason why it's outlawed here i think , apart from very rare cases

I saw a doc here on a man with a heart condition who got tased (or tasered ?)

and died

I have a friend with a heart condition and he sports

So having a heart condition doesn't necessarily mean you can't run etc

Nah that condition i think is really rare , as opposed to having a heart condition ,

so not a good comparison

My few rules for dealing with the police!

1) Never run. If they can legally encounter you (which they always can even if it is just to say "hello") then running gives the PC to detain you for further questioning.

2) For the most part* the only thing you have to tell a cop is your identity. (And that one is a maybe)

3) be polite, being rude is not going to help you.

4) Do not ever lie. (See 2) most of the time you do not have to answer any question that can in anyway help them 'get' you. (Oh and cops do not always have to tell you your Miranda rights and you always have the right to remain silent)

5) You can say "NO" to any request to search, question, or even talk to you (refusal cannot be used as evidence; they will tell you it can that is a lie.) If they ask if they can search you just say "I do not consent to ANY searches” you can do the same for your car...but they can then (in some cases) search it anyway--but having your non-consent on tape will help you later.

6) You can ask the following "am I under arrest" (that is a YES or NO answer, they will say "Not yet” that is a NO) ask "I'm I being detained?" Same deal... then ask "Am I free to go"

* If you are a witness to a crime and refuse to help that could in some cases be a crime.
