How Evil Are You?

I was watching a show, that asked this very question. They talked about an Obedience to Authority experiment that was conducted in the sixties, and decided to try it again to see if people had changed all that much. I thought it was interesting, and a little shocking.

Could you apply the shocks? I personally would have left, and not taken part at all.

I think that the question is a bit misleading.

It's not a question of being "evil"...it's a question of whether or not your obedience overrules your sense of compassion.

So many factors are at play here.

Are the test subjects volunteers? Are they being paid? Are their jobs in jeopardy if they walk away? Were they informed beforehand that the guinea pigs should be ignored regardless?

I think that the "evil" aspect would apply for the individual who would go past the 150volt mark and actually ENJOY the suffering he/she is causing.

Personally...even if my job was in jeopardy...once the person on the other end yelled "stop" I would walk away.

Bullshit

these kind of tests of just another method of control, so the white WASPs can categorize everything, sayin' what's good or bad, or worthy or not worthy, while the real evil rules the world, in the shadows, treatin' us like puppets.

Isn't that how the whole Nazi system came about? Making people believe that the ones they're doing those terrible things to aren't really human? At first the Nazis tried to kill the Jews by having soldiers shoot them, but they got in trouble with their consience. Pushing a button in a gas chamber because someone tells you to is a whole lot easier. Adolf Eichmann was just doing his job.
There's evil lurking inside all of us...

Exactly! In each case, the participants are complying with authority and the doctor, merely being a doctor, is viewed as knowing more or better about the experiment than the participants.

The fact that they question the procedure at any time validates the good in them.
