You know I love Celia and everything she represents.
She became the most successful Latina in Latin culture DESPITE being a BLACK woman cuz you know how some folks love to think that all latinos look like J.Lo. and conveniently forget/ignore the influence of Africans on their heritage and bloodlines.
She's so badass people HAD to reluctantly come out of their color coded bubbles and celebrate her, her talent and genius could NOT be denied.
I can't tell you how many times people in my own family would say, you aren't Spanish you don't look like us, you're ugly.... "culebra fea" ... my own mother called me that on a regular. My nose was the conversation piece in the room when ever company stopped by. My mom always felt a need to explain how she didn't know why I had such an ugly nose.
I would always think of Celia (how beautiful she always looked) and hold my head up and not give a fuck about the shit that spewed out their mouths. I was a little girl and I was glad to see Celia as a young child. She single-handedly saved my self esteem. She did for many young afro-hispanic girls. Thank you Celia.
I just LOVES that woman! Never ran away from her African heritage.
As for the hateful comments, it's unfortunate so many are brainwashed and still asleep(a DNA ancestry test would slap them back to reality). Shit, just look at Spanish television.

I recently saw a case brought by a dark-skinned latina against her dark-skinned, dreadlocked baby daddy who was using bleaching cream on their baby when he has custody of her. Think of all the negative images(of blackness) we're bombarded with since childhood. Unless you've got wise parents who know the deal, you'll buy into that mess.
