If the government genuinely wants the public to use public transportation more, they are going to have to improve it. I think they still think they will just wait for the demand and then improve the service. It doesn't seem to be working that way.

American's love their cars. They don't WANT to stop driving.

The US Government does not want US auto makers to fail. They spent a great deal of time and money making sure this didn't happen.

Public transportation infrastructure has grown so expensive that its actually being cut in many places.

In short, PT is never going to be what it should be. The Bay Area has pretty bad ass PT and its still lacking on many fronts. Not the least of which is how long it takes and how much it costs to go anywhere. Plus, the estimates for the work that needs to be done to improve and repair it are just outrageous. Tens of billions of dollars.

No, its more likely that what will end up eliviating traffic more than anything else is smart cars. You'll get in your car, tell it where you are going and it will basically drive you their by itself. That way the flow of traffic will be kept moving in the right places at the right times at the best possible speeds. Parking on the other hand...

My city's public transport system is really limited, some parts of town you can't even get to

My mum asked me today if I take public transport to work, I'm like wtf mum! I'd have to drive to the train station, take a train into the city, then catch a tram (trolley) back out to work - a trip that would take well over an hour each way and cost me $6 in fares. It takes me 20 mins to drive there and I park in a parking house that is $10 for the day. Since the costs of petrol and parking are a tax deductible expense as a freelancer, I'd rather pay a bit extra and get there and back much faster.
