Borders Could Disappear Forever This Weekend

Well, this is sad. But not entirely unexpected, I guess.

http://gawker.com/5821213/

Reddish book chain Borders went bankrupt earlier this year, and it looks like the "anything but books" revitalization plan hasn't panned out. We could be living in the last few days of Borders' existence, ever.

The WSJ says that a buyout offer for Borders fell through last night, because, although it might have kept the company running, creditors thought it was too low. They had a significantly better offer from a liquidator. And no saviors seem to be looming on the horizon.

The development raises the prospect that Borders will soon close all its remaining 399 stores and go out of business. No other suitors have so far emerged for Borders ahead of a Sunday bidding deadline.

Sad. We should do something, guys. Does anyone want to chip in $253 million?

Well. Sad.

I did too! Borders is nice to walk around in, but their prices are too expensive.

Crap! I knew the chain was in trouble and closed a bunch of stores, but the store where I live is still open, and I have a $10 gift card I got for my birthday I haven't spent yet. sad Barnes & Noble isn't doing very well with it's physical store locations either, but their woes have been offset with the success of their Nook e-reader.

Red wine. I've tried to like it for decades, but like coffee, it offends my tastebuds

Those are two of my favorite things on this entire earth! And pizza would be a third thing. I am shocked and stymied by this news.

my gf always said she did not like Borders, and lately I am hearing that they did not hire the right people to buy their books, where B&N had book people who knew the right product to stock

but both stores are ridiculously huge. They would have to sell a lot of books to keep that up.

I hated working there and hated my coworkers. I was a bit happy when I walked in the mall about 4 months after getting laid off and saw it was gone lol

I've always preferred Barnes and Noble and independent book stores biggrin

Their clearance sale was awesome, 70% off most books. Only time I ever bought anything from them.

are you talking regular paperback novels Joe?

If I got a new release, best seller kind of novel on paperback here, I could expect to pay around US$30 for it. Which is why I get all my books from UK now, for half that price, because on eBay most bookstores don't charge for shipping.
