Gilbert Arenas Goes For the Block Against Baby Mama

NBA great Gilbert Arenas wants a judge to pull the plug on "Basketball Wives: Los Angeles," claiming his baby mama is illegally exploiting him by appearing on the show.

The Orlando Magic guard claims Laura Govan -- the mother of his 4 children -- signed up to do "Basketball Wives" solely to become a television personality. In the lawsuit, Arenas claims even though the soon-to-be-debuted series doesn't mention him by name, "the very presence of defendant Govan and the title of the show is an obvious reference to [Arenas]." And Arenas notes his name was used in the press release announcing Govan had joined the cast.

Gilbert claims Govan and the producers have no right to use his name or likeness -- expressed or implied -- so he's asking a judge to slap an injunction on the show so it can't air. He also wants cash for his troubles.

http://news.yahoo.com/no-him-her-preschool-fights-gender-bias-122541829.html

No 'him' or 'her'; preschool fights gender bias

STOCKHOLM (AP) — At the "Egalia" preschool, staff avoid using words like "him" or "her" and address the 33 kids as "friends" rather than girls and boys.

From the color and placement of toys to the choice of books, every detail has been carefully planned to make sure the children don't fall into gender stereotypes.

"Society expects girls to be girlie, nice and pretty and boys to be manly, rough and outgoing," says Jenny Johnsson, a 31-year-old teacher. "Egalia gives them a fantastic opportunity to be whoever they want to be."

The taxpayer-funded preschool which opened last year in the liberal Sodermalm district of Stockholm for kids aged 1 to 6 is among the most radical examples of Sweden's efforts to engineer equality between the sexes from childhood onward.

Breaking down gender roles is a core mission in the national curriculum for preschools, underpinned by the theory that even in highly egalitarian-minded Sweden, society gives boys an unfair edge.

To even things out, many preschools have hired "gender pedagogues" to help staff identify language and behavior that risk reinforcing stereotypes.

Some parents worry things have gone too far. An obsession with obliterating gender roles, they say, could make the children confused and ill-prepared to face the world outside kindergarten.

"Different gender roles aren't problematic as long as they are equally valued," says Tanja Bergkvist, a 37-year-old blogger and a leading voice against what she calls "gender madness" in Sweden.

Those bent on shattering gender roles "say there's a hierarchy where everything that boys do is given higher value, but I wonder who decides that it has higher value," she says. "Why is there higher value in playing with cars?"

At Egalia — the title connotes "equality" — boys and girls play together with a toy kitchen, waving plastic utensils and pretending to cook. One boy hides inside the toy stove, his head popping out through a hole.

Lego bricks and other building blocks are intentionally placed next to the kitchen, to make sure the children draw no mental barriers between cooking and construction.

Director Lotta Rajalin notes that Egalia places a special emphasis on fostering an environment tolerant of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people. From a bookcase she pulls out a story about two male giraffes who are sad to be childless — until they come across an abandoned crocodile egg.

Nearly all the children's books deal with homosexual couples, single parents or adopted children. There are no "Snow White," ''Cinderella" or other classic fairy tales seen as cementing stereotypes.

Rajalin, 52, says the staff also try to help the children discover new ideas when they play.

"A concrete example could be when they're playing 'house' and the role of the mom already is taken and they start to squabble," she says. "Then we suggest two moms or three moms and so on."

Egalia's methods are controversial; some say they amount to mind control. Rajalin says the staff have received threats from racists apparently upset about the preschool's use of black dolls.

But she says that there's a long waiting list for admission to Egalia, and that only one couple has pulled a child out of the school.

Jukka Korpi, 44, says he and his wife chose Egalia "to give our children all the possibilities based on who they are and not on their gender."

Sweden has promoted women's rights for decades, and more recently was a pioneer among European countries in allowing gay and lesbian couples to legalize their partnerships and adopt children.

Gender studies permeate academic life in Sweden. Bergkvist noted on her blog that the state-funded Swedish Science Council had granted $80,000 for a postdoctoral fellowship aimed at analyzing "the trumpet as a symbol of gender."

Jay Belsky, a child psychologist at the University of California, Davis, said he's not aware of any other school like Egalia, and he questioned whether it was the right way to go.

"The kind of things that boys like to do — run around and turn sticks into swords — will soon be disapproved of," he said. "So gender neutrality at its worst is emasculating maleness."

Egalia is unusual even for Sweden. Staff try to shed masculine and feminine references from their speech, including the pronouns him or her — "han" or "hon" in Swedish. Instead, they've have adopted the genderless "hen," a word that doesn't exist in Swedish but is used in some feminist and gay circles.

"We use the word "Hen" for example when a doctor, police, electrician or plumber or such is coming to the kindergarten," Rajalin says. "We don't know if it's a he or a she so we just say 'Hen is coming around 2 p.m.' Then the children can imagine both a man or a woman. This widens their view."

Egalia doesn't deny the biological differences between boys and girls — the dolls the children play with are anatomically correct.

What matters is that children understand that their biological differences "don't mean boys and girls have different interests and abilities," Rajalin says. "This is about democracy. About human equality."

Tennessee man sets kitten on fire, yells "Die Kitty!"

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn (Reuters) - A Tennessee man who covered a 2-day-old kitten with body spray and set it afire while yelling "Die Kitty!" will report next month to begin serving a 6 1/2-month sentence, his lawyer said Tuesday.

Christopher Schneider, who was 19 at the time of the 2010 incident, pleaded guilty to animal cruelty in the killing of four kittens, according to Sevier County Assistant Public Defender Micaela Burnham, who represented Schnieder.

Burnham said that the telephone videotape of her client setting the cat afire and yelling for it to die was showed in court Monday in this small city in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Other videotape detailed the killing of the three other kittens by Schneider's three alleged accomplices. Two of the kittens were thrown into the woods like baseballs and the other thrown up in the air and swatted like a baseball by a piece of metal, according to Burnham.

She said her client cooperated with police and provided the other videos, which showed three other defendants -- two juveniles and one adult still awaiting trial -- killing the other kittens.

Burnham said her client was satisfied with the sentence. "We did not offer a defense, we pleaded guilty. He admitted he was involved, he provided evidence to the police voluntarily," she said.

She also said that her client expressed remorse for his behavior and has admitted to an alcohol problem.

The tapes shown and heard in court made it clear that all four subjects were intoxicated, she said. Burnham said Schneider "has taken steps to get his life in order."

Her client -- who was given 30 days to get his affairs in order -- will report to the Sevier County Jail July 27. In addition to the jail time, he was fined $3,000 plus costs and ordered to serve 150 hours of community service. He also must have a mental health evaluation, according to the district attorney's office.

Man climbs traffic light in NYC's Times Square

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who climbed atop a traffic light and briefly stopped cars in New York City's Times Square has been taken into custody.

The man climbed the 20-foot pole Tuesday morning and refused to come down for about an hour.

Police halted traffic and set up an inflatable cushion under the pole at 44th Street and Seventh Avenue for fear he would jump.

The man appeared to argue with four police officers trying to negotiate with him from the ladder of a police emergency truck.

Hundreds of onlookers packed the sidewalks to watch.

The man was wearing a red polo shirt, khaki shorts and baseball cap. He finally came down the ladder around 11:15 a.m. and was taken into custody.

Naaah, not really. lol I thought it intersting that there was "Men" and "Women" threads right next to each other on the front page. The same - but seperated. I hate everyone equally, so I thought I'd just shore up the loose ends and make it an equal rights hate party! (puts hate fist in the air)

I believe we will, but I don't think its going to take all that long (at least not in relation to how long the Earth, galaxy, universe, etc. have been around).

7 cops investigated in slay of Mexico police chief

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) — Mexican authorities are investigating seven police officers in the killing of a police chief in a northern Mexico town.

Nuevo Leon state security spokesman Jorge Domene Zambrano says the officers allegedly did nothing to stop Monday's attack on Police Chief German Perez in Santa Catarina.

Domene says those under investigation include Perez's bodyguards and officers who were guarding the police station.

The spokesman says Santa Catarina's public safety secretary is also being questioned, but he doesn't say whether that official suspected in the attack.

Nuevo Leon Gov. Rodrigo Medina says several Santa Catarina officers were fired over the weekend and investigators are studying whether revenge was the motive for the attack.

Meter reader says report of Caylee Anthony's skull ignored

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) - A meter reader recounted on Tuesday how he found the skull of 2-year-old Caylee Anthony in August 2008 but couldn't get anyone to take him seriously until four months later when investigators recovered the body in the spot he identified.

Roy Kronk is a key witness for the defense in the first-degree murder trial of 25-year-old Casey Anthony, accused of smothering daughter Caylee on June 16, 2008 and dumping her remains in woods near their home.

Kronk is one of several people who defense attorney Jose Baez has said may have played a role in the disposal of Caylee's remains.

Kronk has so far said that on August 11, 2008, he parked his work truck on Suburban Drive -- around the corner from the Anthonys' home -- and walked into the woods to relieve himself. Kronk said he noticed about 30 feet away what appeared to be a small, white skull.

He said he told two co-workers with him what he saw, but they were too distracted by the body of a water moccasin snake to pay attention. Kronk said he called a crime tip line later that night to report the skull-like object.

At the time, a nationwide search was underway to find Caylee, who Casey claimed was kidnapped by a nanny.

But detectives were zeroing in on Casey, who they knew had lied extensively about Caylee's disappearance. Special tip lines were created to handle the thousands of tips and leads sent to authorities.

Kronk said he called the Orange County Sheriff's Office again a day or two after his first call. This time, two deputies met him on Suburban Drive. But they did not go into the woods or ask him to show them the skull-like object.

"I just pointed in the area," Kronk said.

Kronk's meter route brought him back to Suburban Drive on December 11, 2008. This time when he reported the skull, investigators came to the scene and found Caylee's remains.

The defense maintains that Caylee drowned in the Anthony family's backyard pool, and no one reported her death. Defense attorneys have also tried to raise questions about what happened to Caylee's body in the six months between her death and the recovery of her remains.

Earlier in the morning, the defense team continued for a second day to stress that numerous other people had fruitlessly searched the same woods in the general area where Caylee's remains ultimately were found.

Private investigator Dominic Casey and his helper, James Hoover, testified on Monday that they searched the same general area in November 2008 based on a psychic's tip and did not find the body.

Casey's mother Cindy denied under questioning by defense lawyers on Tuesday that she had directed the private investigator to follow up on the tip.

However, Casey's brother Lee testified that his mother told him prior to October 2008 that she had sent the private investigator to follow up on the psychic's tip.

Lee said he specifically remembered the incident because it was the first time anyone in his family had indicated a willingness to search for a body rather than a live Caylee.

Casey's father, George Anthony, also took the stand briefly again on Tuesday, denying assertions by defense attorney Baez that he had an affair with search volunteer Krystal Holloway. George testified he only went to Holloway's condominium to comfort her after learning she had cancer.

"I never had a romantic affair," George said.

He denied ever telling Holloway that "Caylee's death was an accident that snowballed out of control." He also said he never told her that he grabbed Casey by the throat, threw her against a wall and demanded Casey tell him where Caylee was.

"She (Holloway) is not a good person," George testified.

New York sues breast cancer charity for misusing donations

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The state of New York sued a Long Island-based breast cancer charity on Tuesday, accusing the group of soliciting more than $9 million and spending virtually none of it on the cause.

The Coalition Against Breast Cancer raised $9.1 million from public donations over the past five years, but nearly all the money was used to pay fundraiser fees, salaries, benefits packages, and other personal goods, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said.

The Coalition Against Breast Cancer and its for-profit fundraiser, Campaign Center, were accused of violations of the New York state not-for-profit and charitable solicitations laws. Both groups were not immediately available for comment.

"By using a charity as a personal cash machine, the Coalition Against Breast Cancer and Campaign Center shamelessly exploited New Yorkers' natural sympathies and generosity," Schneiderman said in a statement.

He said donors were falsely told their money would be used to fund breast cancer research, mammogram screenings through a mobile van, and support seminars and forums for survivors and their families. The group is also accused of advertising bogus ties with the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Schneiderman is seeking to have the charity shut down and its directors held financially accountable.

According to the lawsuit, the Coalition Against Breast Cancer spent less than 4 percent of the money it received over the past five years on the charitable programs it promoted.

"Instead of benefiting breast cancer victims and their families, millions of dollars were misused for personal benefit. This type of scam will not be tolerated in New York, and my office will continue its work to stop charities fraud and hold those who commit it accountable," Schneiderman said.

U.S. tax authorities grant groups charitable status, exempting them from taxes, but most laws governing nonprofits are at state level from the attorney-general.

Experts have said that U.S. authorities, particularly in cash-strapped states, have not devoted enough resources to policing nonprofit groups. High-profile charities run by U.S. singer Madonna and best-selling author Greg Mortenson have this year been involved in controversies.

Many U.S. states are facing financial hardships stemming from the U.S. recession of 2007-2009, which has limited their budgets for law enforcement and other services.

Schneiderman announced in April plans to reform cumbersome laws and regulations burdening the state's charities in a bid to ease what he called a looming funding crisis.

New York's nonprofits employ 500,000 people -- up to 18 percent of the state's workforce -- while finance and insurance companies in New York City employ about 341,000 people.
