The positives and negatives of Google Chrome

Inspired by the Desktop Background thread where some of us discussed the use of Google Chrome, I decided to do a thread that I can discuss the goods and bads of using this website.

Now first things first: the positives.

  • Quick surfing (now as everyone has already pointed out, the browser is FAST AS FUCK! As soon as you go to a site, you are there within a millisecond! Whereas Firefox and Safari and Opera take you there way faster than Internet Slower, er, Explorer, Chrome just takes a moment. lol )
  • Video watching (it's easier to watch videos on any site using Chrome, there's no video lags at all and some videos load so fast it don't even take time "buffering" especially on YouTube)
  • The BETA and Flash is not difficult when running Chrome whereas some problems occur in other browsers, especially IE and FF (at times).
  • Private browsing (if you don't want to be tracked, it definitely helps you in not saving cookies for the browser you're entering).

The negatives:

  • What is up with the themes (see this is why I fucks with Firefox, it has a lot of personas and themes you can use of any sort, on Chrome, you only have 16 neutral )
  • The memory space (where you can easily delete cache, cookies and the likes of Firefox - don't know about Safari or IE but I assume that you can clean them out too) is somewhere on Chrome where if you're lucky to find it, you're a net genius.
  • You can't install it on D drive, because it's predestined to the C drive (apparently Google don't care that you have another drive, if you install it, it stays on the C drive unless you find the cache and you can move it to another folder for Google on the D drive...if you can find it.)

I really can't think of more but that's the jist of it... now's the time for y'all to say what's so good (or bad) about this browser and I welcome any advice on how to install it on the D drive... typing

I downloaded and used Chrome when it first came out, and used it off and on for a year or two. I liked the idea of how it interpreted HTML, it's engines, and how it executed it's functions. But I uninstalled it about a year ago, and haven't used or thought about it since. I see they've recently ramped up the promotion of it, but from my research, and from my experience, Firefox remains a much better browser overall.

You mentioned Chrome having 16 themes. When I used it last, it didn't have any, lol. Just the one look. And regarding IE, if it wasn't a part of the Windows OS, I'd uninstall it altogether. Can't believe how far Microsoft dropped the ball in regards to browsers.

I've also used Safari, Flock (which has just been discontinued), Netscape, Opera, and a handful of others (even Outlook can be used as a browser). Firefox remains my favorite overall.

For a while I used Safari but something happened the last two or three times I tried to install it whenever I uninstalled it. Apparently when you uninstall Safari, they leave its contents in your Apple Computer folder, you can delete it though because the browser is gone. I think QuickTime comes with your computer anyway so ain't no need to delete all of Apple lol. So I stopped using Safari (though it was good for a while). Flock was alright but for some reason it was like a dysfunctional cousin of Firefox so that affair ended after two installs and a half). Netscape, I only used it on computers back in the day lol Opera is the second best browser after Firefox but for some reason, they are like Chrome in eating memory space so I just waved it goodbye recently. I tried installing it again but I found why I couldn't fully fall in love with it (themes/memory).

So it's been Firefox all the way. Chrome would be alright if I can install it on D drive but Google could give two fucks lol

I have Chromium, which is THE open-source version of Chrome.

Chromium is a little faster than Firefox (despite that Firefox 4 is a major improvent from Firefox 3!). But I will always use Firefox as my primary internet browser because the add-on extensions & plugins for it are far more superiors than the ones for Chromium.

Man Firefox 4 got better when I reinstalled it!!! At first I was like mad but after getting over it, I've found myself enjoying it. I don't even mind the drag of some GIFs... lol That's how great it is. nod

It misinterprets some CSS positioning functions (this means that elements appear at wrong places on the screen). I haven't seen anything of the kind with other browsers. With IE / Firefox / Opera there might be sometimes -1...+1 pixel difference, but Chrome might even throw stuff around on the other side of the screen if some line in the code isn't written like it expects. Sure, once you are aware of the quirks and limitations of a certain browser they you able to to take those into account (and that can actually improve your own skills). I just think that the browsers should conform to the standards and not force people doing webpages to conform to the new standards set by some company that's just released a new browser.

I've actually used Chrome quite a lot during the last couple of weeks on a laptop. Just seems to work nicely with a limited screen size without any modifications needed.

There were certain bugs in Flock that they NEVER corrected. I think perhaps the whole Flock project was just a bit too ambitious, lol. It never quite lived up to it's own hype.

Of all the browsers in recent years, Firefox has adhered the closest to the standards set forth by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

I would imagine. Plus there was too much shit added to it. I remembered when I installed Flock on my LAPTOP and it was sluggish as hell for some reason. It ran good on my desktop (which I now have) but I got tired of it quick.

I find the positives and negatives of Chrome, from a user interface standpoint, to be almost the same thing.

I like the elegance and lack of clutter - but the other side of that same coin is that it seems to be less feature-rich and somehow boring to use.

It's what you make it.

I swear all this stuff I keep seeing about Chrome being a space and resource hog, I can't relate to, I've never had problems in that area.

The premade layouts for Chrome do suck, but if you hate them that much you can always go to Chrome Maker and make your own, that's what I do.

Other than that I pretty much can't add a damn thing to this thread other than unnecessary random emoticons. eek

Oh! I just remembered to add that Chrome is starting to catch up Firefox with the whole add-on thing; only they call theirs the 'Web Store' or something. Most are free, but some they want you to pay for. neutral

I'm a Chrome convert.

One of the little things I like:

You can drag a word, phrase or link to the tab row (it'll google the first two). clapping

I forgot to add that to the positives of Chrome. I thought that was the COOLEST THING ever! eek clapping biggrin

Like I said, the browser has a lot of nice qualities, I just don't want it to stay on my C drive. lol Maybe if they did that (and add more themes) I can convert fully to it lol

Right. I love the lack of clutter (another positive) but I agree with it not having much features and it is boring. I'm used to excitement, something Firefox always has to me...

so in essence it performes well only when stripped down to basics??... mhh!.. give me my Firefox with all it's whistles and bells anyday.

But i am a little disappointed with Firefox 4 the way it hangs on you from time to time.Seems the problem is with your Add-ons, switch em all off then restart, switch on again, seems on the upgrade things were a little lost in translation...needs to be fiddled about with to make it smooth.

Having said all that im gonna give Chrome a bash... smile

I've gotten used to the drags and yeah the Add-Ons situation was a bit complex when I decided to erase some stuff to get memory but it's OK now.

YEAH! Like "this won't be included in your browser unless you hit quit and restart". That's annoying. lol But I got used to it after a while. lol Same with the browser "closing" and still "open". It'll usually say "this browser is not closed, please quit it and restart." Had to resort to Task Manager to close it, that's been happening since '09. lol

*sputters* How dare you accuse me of using a Mac! *highly appalled* Nah, I'm just kidding. But seriously - whyyyyy? LMAO

When did you last try Chrome though? I'm thinking you have to be talking about an older version, because I'm a pretty recent convert and I've never had space issues while using it.

A few weeks ago. Not that I'm having space issues... it's memory really. I got like 8.5 GB of freespace on my C drive, after installing Chrome, instead of 7.8 of used space, it got to 8.1, I don't like anything where it gets to 8 GB of used space. lol

Well, hell - I don't blame you then for being anti-Chrome. But I swear I never have that problem, and it's not that I do some super-hacker comp-tech stuff either; I've been known to have Chrome going and a bunch of other crap all at once and everything still works fine for me. It was Firefox that was giving me a hard time recently - kept crashing and dragging really badly, so I just made the leap to Chrome for good.

Have you ever checked how many MBs are uploaded after Chrome is installed, you be surprised. lol And having all the cache stored in it doesn't make it any better. lol
