Coyotes are running around in my backyard...what do I do?

There's 5 of them and they're howling like bitches. What if I come home drunk one night and they attack me?

Can I kill them?

I would call the Humane Society, just to ask their opinion...perhaps they have had calls like this before?

Seriously, the coyotes won't hurt you... just contact your local animal control and have them take care of it if they can.

We have one guy who does this shit...the "dog officer". You call and he doesn't respond for weeks.

I'm not scared if it's one or two, but they are always in packs and that's when they will attack humans. Some guy got chased up a tree a month ago. I can't climb trees! I come home very late just about every weekend and I don't want to get mauled.

Yeah, that really does suck...

I would suggest getting some traps.

That's a good idea Ice...I didn't even think of it. There is only one opening in my backyard, the rest is fenced in. I can boobie (hee-hee!) trap that spot and hopefully get them. I'm just scared that another animal may get trapped instead...like my cat.

I'm betting there's some device you can put in your backyard to scare them away, some kind of noisemaker.
If the local animal safety doesn't know, call a larger office for some hints.

Interesting thread..., I second what Moombeam said. I personally would carry some sort of defense, would pepper spray work or something more appropriate? Any sort of loud noise should scare them away, at least here in Arizona it works. big grin

Be careful!

HERE'S what I suggest you do to get rid of the coyotes, CarrieLee.

Set up your stereo speakers so that they point out the window facing the coyotes.

Grab Prince's "Diamonds and Pearls" album.

Turn the volume on your stereo to MAXIMUM.

Play the track called "Jughead".

Should work a treat!

Do these Coyotes use devices manufactured by Acme? if so, then you've nothing to fear.

Seriously though, you need to avoid showing fear of any kind. Don't be agressive, but don't cower either. I recommend carrying something that will make a loud noise to startle them.

Animal control should take care of them. The fact that they don't take it seriously pisses me off. First off, they're just asking for a person to get attacked (and Coyotes are more prone to attack something smaller, like a child for instance). They also are putting the animals themselves at risk. Just a matter of time before someone starts poisoning them (which is never good, since domestic animals usually wind up getting poisoned as well).

Do NOT fucking trap or shoot them for gawd's sake! It's dangerous and cruel; if you trap them, you still have a live animal to deal with, and now they have a broken leg and are in a lot of pain, so they are gonna be cranky. Unless you are a very good shot, you would probably have to get very close, and then you risk being very close to an angry coyote that you have just injured. Not to mention that you may need a liscence to do either of those things, and if you do it without a liscence you will have to deal with body disposal yourself.

They won't hurt you. They might hurt your cat, but you shouldn't be letting your cat outside to roam anyway if you give a damn about her.

Call the Humane Society.

There. Got my self-righteousness out for the day.

Actually, this is totally correct. Contact animal control and tell them that the coyotes are starting to get more agressive. If you try to trap them, you could wind up with a pointless, but hefty, fine. On top of that, you may wind up harming the animal, thus making it more agressive. Animal control should have their own traps, and you should make them put your tax dollars to work!

You also may want to keep the kitty-puss inside for the time being, as it is highly likely that they would attack it.

You said that most of your backyard was fenced in except for one opening. Could you possibly buy some moderately priced fencing for the opening and maybe have your dad install if for you? I would fence in the entire backyard as well as calling animal control. Make a pest out of yourself and call them everyday untill they take you seriously or tell them you are going to report them to your city officals. Better yet, get in touch with a reporter or trouble shooter from a local television station and tell them about the problem you are having and that animal control will not help you and they are not taking you seriously.
