Is it possible to pop your ribs out just from coughing?

Just wondering... not sure yet if that's what happened to me.

cry

It hurts a little for the 2nd day in a row, and I heard a pop and now have some discomfort. I'm hoping it heals on it's own.

You've probably torn a muscle in between the ribs. They can make a popping sound too, they kinda click between the bones. Done it myself before and it's bloody painful. Not much you can do either, except buy a bucketload of nuke-level ibuprofen and whinge a lot!

"Pop" a rib? No, I don't know anything about that, but you can bruise and crack your own ribs from coughing violently.

Go to a Dr. ! You do not want to walk around like that, you might have pneumonia or something that can become that if you don't take care of that cough now.

The pop was the sound of your lung exploding. If you don't have it patched before your lung loses all the air inside... hrmph

Seriously, please see your doctor asap about this. I'm sure you're all sexy and stuff, but "hackalicious" is never a good look for anyone. Besides, I'm sure it hurts by now, so please get help. hug

I agree with all of the above (except Pandy for some reason hmmm )

I had a lovely bout of "Walking Pneumonia" about 3 years ago and I coughed so hard my Doc said I fractured a rib. That was the most painful shit EVER!!!

Go get yourself checked out and get you some o' that GoodPharmaShit...

I seem to get bronchitis every winter just after the holidays and either I tear the muscle between my ribs or a couple times I've actually fractured a rib. It hurts like hell.

Like everyone else said, get yourself to a doctor and get some good drugs.

Avoiding situations like this is the real reason Prince had that rib removed.

I've broken ribs from coughing.

It's happened twice.

Had the flu.

Thanks for all the advice!

biggrin

I wasn't sure if what I asked was possible, not I see that it is.

My rib or muscle popped probably because of the way I was sitting, my back was to the t.v. but my face was turned to it when I coughed. That's when I felt and heard the pop.

Guess I should go to the doctor's, just wanted to see if it would heal by itself first. The pain, I can handle it if I don't overstrain myself. The first day the pain was worse, still hurts if I cough putting pressure on the lung area.

I have done this twice... actually from trying not to cough in the middle of the night for fear of keeping up my roommate... the pop I heard was the rib dislocating from the cartilidge that holds it to your sternum (chest bone)... if you've done it once it is easier to do it again because cartilidge doesn't regrow and it is just the muscles holding it in place once it heals. There isn't much the doctor can do besides give you meds for the pain, but sometimes those are nice too.

Good Luck! biggrin

The last time I did it the pain was pretty bad for about a week and then started to get better... it can also help if your doc can get you good cough syrup since it will take longer to feel better if you're still coughing.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thanks, this has really helped me. At least I know what to expect.

I'm just going to take it easy and let it heal or the pain subside. Right now I have it wrapped with a bandage and should be feeling better in a week or so, although I can probably bear the pain - it's not as bad as it was on the first day, except when I cough or sneeze - but then I hold my side when I know I'm going to cough.

Go to a doctor! brick

Do not mess around with your lungs, it may get worse and you don't want to wait for that to happen.

So please see the doctor and get a medicine otherwise you may take a turn for the worse and end up needing crap you could have prevented needing.

Its like that old saying, a stitch in time saves nine. smile

It's that I've been to the doctors a lot lately and I really hate going to the doctors. But I have an appointment tomorrow so I'll ask them about it. At least I won't have to make a separate trip.

Oh good! hug They may give you an inhalor to help your lungs open up.

This way you'll feel a heck of a lot better. Get well you.

I fractured a rib coughing....you dont even want to go there.......that thing was hurting forever. Get to the doctor before you do worse....

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.
