Height: Inches to Feet Question?

Here's a puzzler.

I just got measured for height at the doctor.

12 inches = 1 foot.

Therefore someone who is 6' tall is: 12 x 6 = 72".

Easy so far.

So for every less inch you take off an inch;

Therefore 71" = 5'11"

70" = 5'10".

Etc.

Easy so far.

Now it gets confusing:

Take 71" divided by 12 and you get: 5.92. A little over 5"9".

70" divided by 12 = 5'8.3" A little over 5'8".

????????

Where is my logic wrong? 70" cannot be both 5'10 and 5'8!

I even looked up some height charts and seemed to get contradictory information.

Can anyone share light on this brain puzzler?

Your logic is wrong because you're claiming that a foot consists simultaneously
of 12 inches and 10 inches.

Where am I doing this?

5.92 doesn't equal a little over 5'9". It equals 5 and 92/100 of whatever you're measuring.

So 69.5 " equals 5' 9 1/2." Right?

Thanks.

I think I got it?

There ya go. Decimal points are based on 10 units per measure (or multiples of ten per measure - like hundredths or thousandths). Inches are based on 12 units per measure.

Maybe for the larger of the two measurements, they are standing on their tippy-toes?

Heights are calculated this way:

1. Divide inches by 12, but disregard any decimals (e.g. 71" = 5')

2. Add the leftover inches (in this case, 11)

Voila! If you are 71" tall, you are "5'11".
