Cockroaches: The Antibiotics of the Future?

[img:$uid]http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii122/StillGotItNow/1864655cc6yqk20aa.gif[/img:$uid]

The potent chemicals, found in the brain and central nervous tissues of cockroaches, are able to kill 90 percent of E. coli and MRSA in lab-based tests.

Superbugs ... have shown the ability to cause untreatable infections and have become a major threat in our fight against bacterial diseases," Dr. Naveed Khan, who supervised the work of lead researcher Simon Lee, said in a press release. "Thus, there is a continuous need to find additional sources of novel anti-microbials to confront this menace."

Thus, cockroaches might be a new source to create medicines?

After seeing this article....breakfast is ruined and I am looking at my prescriptions all funny now......

Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

Method To Prepare a Cockroach for Human Consumption :

Take a fresh cockroach ; steal one from the exhibit's in London Zoo's insect house if necessary. Then :

  1. Remove & discard the solid wing covering flaps.
  2. Slice off the head and arse area.
  3. Pull off the legs.
  4. Make an incision along the back of what's left & crack it open down the middle, revealing the fleshy insides.
  5. Place your opened 'roach under a low grill for two minutes.
  6. Artistically present it on a plate (i.e. put a slice of lemon next to it).
  7. Yummy! Use a teaspoon and fingers! It looks like a black olive!

But, this article is actually about using cockroaches and other "superbugs" to create new antibiotics and anti-microbials to fight drug-resistant bacterial infections. It's not about EATING them. I guarantee you if there is a new drug based on a chemical found in a cockroach that would save you dieing from E.coli you'd be on it in a hot second. lol

Makes sense. Cockroaches can survive pretty much anything. Hell, they even live for days after losing their head, they finally starve to death, so why not see if they can help cure e-coli and MRSA?

But yeah....gross.

I'm firmly planted in denial
