so what are the games like on the HTC desire? they are pretty cool on the iphone, especially with the gyroscope etc

btw in the uk at least, you still have to pay about £200 and tie yourself into a more expensive contract whereas the desire is literally given away free on relatively cheap contracts, as service providers know they are struggling to compete with the iphones popularity

regarding accessories, for example docking stations/speakers, car accesories, etc. if you need your iphone charged up it's easy to find someone with a cable, whether in the office or in the car. i got 2 spare cables for 99p delivered from amazon for example

the iphone is also slimmer and nicer to look at, and that's important for a lot of people. the desire just doesn't live up to it's name in that respect, especially compared to the latest model

i think from the linux mention your taking the wrong viewpoint, it wouild be like comparing IOS to OSX, it's not a full OS it's a mobile one. my point is a mobile device OS's strong point is usability, being nice to use and being intuitive, and that's where the iphone leads. you can add more options to froyo, but it's the way it works nicely that matters for most users, and that's why people buy apple stuff, the like the look and feel instead of the flexibility. i want flexibility on my pc, and usability on my phone

Actually games is not my strong suit. I don't know. I know that my nephew and niece spend the same amount of time playing games on their dads iPad as well as his HTC Hero, so I guess the difference can't be that big.

I'm in the UK - and T-Mobile offered me the iPhone 4 and the Desire both for free, on the same deal. But I've been a customer for a long time, so perhaps that counts for something. I am pretty sure Vodafone had the same contracts for iPhone 4 and Nexus One as well though.

The iPhone isn't slimmer and any nicer to look at than the new Samsung Galaxy S. On my flight back from Canada, the guy sat next to me had the Galaxy S and his girlfriend/partner had the iPhone 4, I talked to them about it and both preferred the Galaxy S. But looks is just a superficial thing - IMO Android wins there because you have the choice of what hardware you want, whether you want something with a massive screen, or a small screen, a QWERTY keyboard or not, something high end or midrange...it's all about having options. Less options = bad. More options = good.

I've already counted at least 10 different form factors with Android devices, so there's something for everybody.

I agree that people buy Apple products based on the look and feel. It sure ain't the functionality though, because pound-for-pound, Android offers a hell of a lot more functionality and flexibility.

Regarding charging cables - I think you're just as likely to find people with USB-to-miniUSB (which is what most Android devices use) cables as people who have the proprietary Apple cable, because it's a more standardized format for many different devices.

i heard t mobile offered free phones to some customers, apparently long term customers with a good spend, but for the normal punter you have to pay about £200 plus contract, whereas you just need to take a trip to any mobile phone place or look online for a free HTC desire

one area the iphone does lead is on the games, it has a much bigger and better range. i'm not a gamer myself, but i did grab a few games to play with whilst on the bus or bored at work, and they are pretty cool time wasters

the usb leads are common, but try asking around for an ipod cable vs the cable you want, such as in an office, with the ipod being so popular the cables are everywhere. ask friends in cars if they have the iphone cable to charge your phone vs the mini usb and you'll find very few people will have in car chargers with mini usb, but a few may have usb cigarette lighter chargers and the things to let you play ipods via fm radio

i don't know much about the galaxy, it's obviously designed to compete with the iphone. it's not as high a resolution screen, even if the ad's are making the screen a selling point, and it's only got half the available ram as the iphone 4. the point is that the op was asking between the old iphone and new, the desire was thrown into the mix, and now this is being added to confuse things further. if the desire was better than the iphone 4, why throw this into the mix, and why not throw it in sooner? it's like saying the desire isn't the right choice, the sammy is instead, even though the op wants an iphone

Here in Holland even the iPhone 4 is given away for "free", depending on the type of plan of course. I got mine for 29 euro with 500 minutes PLUS 500 texts and mobile internet (2048kbps down/384kbps up) costing 65 euro/month for 2 years. "Unlimited" data use.

I paid 1 euro for my 3G when it was introduced, same deal except 300 minutes and texts at 45 euro per month.

The 3GS is now given away for free at 30 euro per month, 2 year contract.

I don't know about resolutions, but the screen technology itself is superior to the iPhone. Samsung's Super AMOLED screens are the most advanced screen technology on the planet, with the most sharp, vivid colors. There was a comparison photoset showing both phones at different angles, in different amounts of direct and indirect light, and the Samsung was clearly superior.

As for RAM, where did you get that from? Both the Galaxy S and the iPhone 4 have 512MB of RAM:

Anyway - I'm not the one that threw the Desire into the mix. I only seconded it, since it had already been mentioned.

If you're talking super-phone VS super-phone, hardware wise, the Samsung Galaxy S smokes the iPhone.

It's getting 2.2 FroYo next month, also, which will set it even further ahead.

We could all sit here and argue specs all day.

What it really boils down to is "do you want to be able to hold the phone AND make a call?".

If that is your desire, than virtually any phone other than iPhone 4 should be your choice.

Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

the sammy screen is lower spec, lower resolution. it may look fine in the sun, but so does the iphone 4. it's one of the first things i noticed when i was showing someone it outside. the sun was blazing down on it and we could still read it clearly

the sammy does have 512mb ram, but only half of that is usable. the iphone 4 specs are either similar or technically better than the sammy if you bother to check the specs

I like to razz the iPhone users because, well, they're iPhone users, but to honestly answer your question, Fury, this is my number 1 complaint with Apple. They could offer you a 64 GB iPhone 4, but won't because then they couldn't sell it to you next year. If you choose the iPhone 4 you are buying intentionally gimped hardware.

If you are concerned about space, go with the 3GS or whatever it's called. That is IF you just HAVE to have an iPhone. You could do alot better out there.

checking out some of the specs...the 3gs takes a sim card like i have now, while the i4 uses a micro sim....i was really just gonna take my sim out of the old one and put it in the new one, because the data plan i have now is better/cheaper than the one they're offering now

you can just cut it down to size. google up for how to get the right size

you can also get this...

http://www.noosyapple.com/

i don't know about the company who's site that is, but you should find a more known dealer for sim cutters

Do what unique said or just get a micro-sim from your provider. It's only a few bucks max.

It's not 30% faster. Check the benchmarks posted.

it is 30% faster. the benchmarks are irrelevant. the facts are that its 833mhz and the 3gs is 600mhz and its got 512mb ram instead of 256mhz

try testing the subject matter for youself and researching your facts before arguing about something you don't know about

nod

I have a 3gs and my friend has a 4g, side by side, hers is faster than mine sad

Mine is lighter and has better reception though smile
