The title of this thread is misleading and untrue....so far. I hope the story stays on the lighter side.

While the story is utterly horrific, we do not know what he caught, if anything. He could also be allergic to latex, which is a common thing. (I know a male nurse that is allergic to latex, so he has to use non-latex gloves at work. The latex flecks At four years old, he could have little allergic reactions to many things. The story says that the grandmother is still waiting on medical test results. I'm also not sure that herpes incubates that quickly and symptoms are present 24 hours later. Could be, but it doesn't sound typical from what I know.

Let's not assume the worst just yet. The kid was obviously compromised, and the hotel should be sued in general for that kind of neglect. But the disease part - let's wait and see. When you're 4 years old, you can have a reaction to anything. Doesn't mean herpes in present forever.

That kid will have a few issues when he's old enough to realize what he really did, whether he contracts any significant disease from it or not.

On top of that I dont think the herpes virus lives very long off of the body.. he would of had to play with it not long after someone had used it, which it may have been hours if not days between guests

Agreed, I'm skeptical.

If that child has herpes it's much more likely from sexual abuse than a condom.

I've never heard of herpes transmission from a condom.

You cannot catch genital herpes by sharing cups, towels or bath water, or from toilet seats. Even during an outbreak, it is only skin to skin contact with the parts of your partner's body which have the sores which you need to avoid. You can still cuddle, share a bed, or kiss.

Can I catch this virus from toilets, or sharing soap, bath towels, etc?

It is generally considered that the spreading of genital herpes through inanimate objects, such as soap, towels, clothing, bed sheets, toilet seats, and spa surfaces is highly unlikely because the herpes virus cannot live very long outside of the body.

In theory this virus will die very quickly once the temperature drops or the moisture around the virus dries up, but a scenario can be suggested where the temperature and moisture holds on long enough for the virus to survive outside the body for several minutes. This could arise where an infected person leaves the virus in droplets of warm urine on the toilet seat and someone uses that toilet seat within a few minutes and has a cut that comes in contact with that pool of warm urine. To avoid this scenario wipe the toilet seat before using.

I'm hoping he doesnt have it either, i titled the thread based on the article and the information within it

"But after 10 days of treatment–which cleared up the blisters–the boy has suffered yet another outbreak."

Judging from the article i'm assuming this treatment was for stds though i could be wrong. i will edit the thread title accordingly. for this childs sake i HOPE it is just a latex allergy

it doesnt live that long off of the body TRUE, but thte article stated that the condom had what appeared to be semen inside of it, so if that was still there the condom may have been left fairly recently. once again, for this childs sake i HOPE it turns out to be nothing

A condom can't be 'infected' by anything.

And why can't they find the past few guests that have been in that room and inquire about their sexual health, their activity, just to know if the kid was/is in danger of anything? Everyone has to fill out a card when they check in.

Good point! But would that be an invasion of privacy??

Where else would the semen in a condom be expected to go?

That doesn't mean it was within the last few minutes, or last hour . .

Under normal circumstances, inquiring about the sexual health of the previous patrons of that hotel room would not only be an invasion of privacy, but against the law since the passing of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Although, they could certainly test the condom, and that could indicate any potential health risks.

Nevertheless, I don't see the condom user at fault though (even if the condom was discarded somewhere other than the trash receptacle or the toilet - like the floor). I would hold the Hotel owner responsible by way of their Housekeeping staff. It's expected that people are having sex in hotel rooms, and hurray; they're using condoms. Housekeeping are responsible for sanitizing those rooms between guests, and should certainly know to be on the look-out for used condoms.

Definitely a freak-out story though, I pity the parent (...and that child when he gets older).

It'd be a police investigation.

well i am assuming tht if the condom were old tht the semen would have dried up by the time the kid got to it
